Exclusive Q&A With The Artistic Laura Lamn

The world is serious enough so for a refreshing, summery and carefree vibe then you must see the new Music video from British musician Laura Lamn. Filled with colour, energy, humour and of course a catchy tune, you'll be dancing and singing along in no time.
Produced by long time collaborator, S2_COOL (you'll hear his vocals in the chorus hook) 'Boyfriend' is an ode to teenage love. London-based songwriter and rapper, Laura Lamn uses intelligent wordplay and everyday observations to make the Song extra memorable and unique. She says of the track, “This is the first song where I wrote the lyrics purely whilst roller skating. It was a sunny day in Springville and I was doing laps of the skate park in my Moxis, whilst listening to the beat S2_COOL sent me. At the time I was lost in a dizzy teenage wash of infatuation and the lyrics came from that excitable and magical place.”
The accompanying visuals reflect the fun aspect of the lyrics and Laura is known for creating quirky and playful music videos. She comments, “I wanted to make the video vibrant, silly and fun. Pink and yellow seemed the perfect summer colour combo to tie the video together. My favourite scene was with the two guys with pink balaclavas. My friend is a dog whisperer and he provided that huge dog for that scene and it was so well behaved.”
S2_COOL delivers the dance vibe with an all-analogue synth and drum machine driven arrangement over which Laura's lyrics softly flow.
Earlier this year, Laura released a collaboration with Grammy Nominated DJ/producer Kaskade for International Women’s Day. Their take on Chaka Khan’s classic, 'I'm Every Woman' gained support from various tastemakers and led to Laura developing her distinctive rap meets disco-house style. Not just a musician, Laura Lamn is a world record holding hula hooper and a talented roller skater, both of which she likes to incorporate into her music videos.
Laura Lamn kindly took some time out of her busy summer to answer a few of our burning questions about her music style, new music video 'Boyfriend' and who she is listening to at the moment:
How would you describe your music style to new listeners?
Poetry with beats you can dance to.
We love your new song and music video for 'Boyfriend'  - Tell us about it
Thank you :-) I wrote the song in Springville, Utah with S2_COOL. It's the silliest song I have written and the craziest video I have made so far. I love it.
When you were writing 'Boyfriend', did you have the visuals in mind otherwise how did they come about?
I have always had a very active imagination. When I decided that I wanted to make a video for this song I would listen to the song over and over and daydream. And somehow all those weird visuals came to me.
Is music/songwriting something you always wanted to do and how did it come about?
I have always written poetry since I was a teenager. My ex-boyfriend was a rapper and opened the door to rapping for me, and once I got the bug I was hooked!
Your music videos tend to be very colourful and creative - do you think you'll ever take a more sombre and serious direction?
I have been writing some darker, and more heartfelt songs and that's definitely something I want to experiment with.
Are there any particular lyrics of yours that are particularly meaningful to you, and why?
In my song woman, "I'm every woman I've been there. I'm every woman I've been scared. The dark the light, the day and night. All the shades are in there."
Life has its ups and downs. We experience happiness and sadness. It's all part of the dance of life.
What is influencing you musically at the moment?
I just discovered Ray LaMontagne and his songwriting is beautiful.
What are the biggest challenges of being in the music industry?
It's competitive. The goal post is always moving and I never seem to get to where I want to be. I recently realised that I came here to write quality songs and the rest is out of my control, so I stay away from getting stressed about everything else and just keep writing songs and making videos.
What music did you listen to growing up?
My Dad loved Ska and Reggae so I was listening to a lot to that. And my mum would always play M People. I was a pop girl and loved the Spice Girls and all the other pop 90's offerings.
Top 5 artists/tracks/EPs/Albums you're listening to right now?
Ray LaMontagne 'Trouble' album (this is old but I just discovered it!)
Major Lazer 'Know No Better' EP
Ray BLK 'doing me'
Sigrid 'Don't Kill My Vibe'
Junior 'A Sleep Machine'
What song or book changed your life?
'Every book' by Osho. The way he thinks inspires me and my life in so many ways.
Is there anywhere you would love to perform? (Venue/City/Country/Festival)
The pyramid stage at Glastonbury.
Dream collaborations?
I would love to work with Macklemore, Drake and Alex Ebert (not at the same time! Not sure that would work)
What do you like to do when you're not writing music?
Rollerskate and wild swimming. I love being outdoors.
Guilty pleasure/s?
I'm into wholesome pleasures. Good food, dancing, being in nature, meditation and sex.
What is the best advice anyone has ever given you?
To live a values based life rather than a goals based life. It's out of control what goals you reach and what boxes you tick off, but I can always live by my values. The things that are important to me are kindness, creativity, connection, learning and fun. So I aim to live them every day.
What is next for Laura Lamn?
I'm ready to show a more sensitive and slightly darker side. I've started playing the guitar and I'm working on some more heartfelt songs.
