The Rest Is History With Refreshing Group J & The Rest

J. is very down to earth, passionate about honing their craft and getting their name out there. We discuss everything from getting a haircut in Westfield to university lifestyle, radio stations and Stormzy. However, let's get down to the nitty-gritty. I ask about the band name, a question I'm sure the group hear a lot and J. laughs and replies, "It was our first rehearsal and we asked each other what we were we going to be called? There were so many ideas flying around, a lot of them rubbish, and I can't even remember who said it first. We decided on J and the something and someone came up with J & The Rest and it just stuck."
J. is part of a musical family where growing up his father listened to Reggae and his mum listened to Fleetwood Mac, Roxy Music and also music with a "tropical influence." His sister was a huge influence on him and his brother as she had a massive music collection. He says, "she was older than her years musically and was listening to artists such as D'Angelo, Musiq Soulchild, Lauryn Hill and Dwele who were really big around that time."
Discussing J & The Rest's sound he says, "We don't ever want to say we do this type of music or that. We go into the studio and produce whatever is knocking around in our brain and the vibe at that moment. It depends on what mood you're in so it's not always going to sound like one thing. You can be really hyper one day and not the next. It changes every day." He continues, "As we're doing more sessions together we are constantly evolving, finding studio and recording technique. Whatever the output is, we have yet to see, we're constantly at work." I ask if everyone in J & The Rest is on the same page and he says, "I'm lucky as they're all really eager to tread new waters and try new things. We're not scared to experiment and everyone is really chilled with the direction and happy to go wherever it takes us."
I ask about the challenges a new band faces in the music industry today and J.'s big sigh says it all, "the sheer overwhelming sense of using social media," he says. He admits they are not that great at spending time on it and prefer the making music side of things. He adds, "just getting a head above water, getting noticed and getting that platform. It's tough."
Previous single '4Am Again' is really uplifting with super chilled beats, a hint of electro and a dash of RnB. There's even a spoonful of retro in there. However you want to describe it, it's damn catchy. New single 'Kisses On The Mirror' has similar themes, but has a slower, elongated tempo and a more seductive vibe with blazing brass and breezy driving beats. J.'s silky vocals wrap around tracks which I can only reiterate again are youthful, addictive and euphoric. In 'Kisses On The Mirror' it's refreshing to hear a man's side of the story of the morning after a night of passion when he's the one Left behind with only the woman's scent, her lipstick kisses on the mirror and memories to remember her by. It could be a bubblegum pop song by anyone else, but as it's so multi-faceted and the production is so slick, it ends up being far more complex and compelling. J says of their new single, "'Kisses On The Mirror' is one of the first songs we did together and is our love child. It's sexy and sultry and we're very proud of it."
Lyrics include, 'She left me kisses on the mirror, she left me a note on the floor, she left me kisses on the mirror, she left me asking for more. Not what I'm used to, not how I thought this would play out, didn't wanna thank you, but who's the sucker now?'
So what inspires J & The Rest as a band at the moment? J. says, "there is a lot of interesting stuff going on in the UK music world at the moment and I listen to the radio stations to see what's happening." He says it is inspiring that Grime music is so popular now. Being from South London he was listening to it as it was coming up. He mentions British artists such as Wiley and, of course, Stormzy.
J & The Rest will be performing at the Fieldview Festival for the first time as a group. He says, "the guys are all seasoned musicians and individually we have done the massive festivals, but this will be our first session together."
So what is next for this irresistible, fresh-faced band? J. says, "Our EP is finished and should be released within the next few months. We are making music that we like and recording as much as we can so want to smash it in that sense. We also want to increase the number of gigs, book some last minute festivals and shows.
Right now, we're playing it by ear."
You can catch J & The Rest at the Fieldview Festival, Little Somerford, 3 - 6th August.
