“The One” by The Chainsmokers is a ballad about a person who holds onto a relationship because they don’t want to be the one to end it. The general theme of the song connects with several other songs on the album, mainly focusing on denying already dead-end relationships.

On the last day of rehearsal for their Memories…Do Not Open Tour, Alex Pall teased bits of the melody on Twitter.

The song was released prior to the hitmaker’s debut LP, on March 27, 2017. The Chainsmokers teased “The One” as a surprise on Twitter the day and a few minutes before the release.
