B McKie Interview

HCM. Where are you from and how did you get to this point in your career as an artist?
B McKie. I am from Montgomery County, PA. (Right outside of Philadelphia) Though I am focused on reaching higher levels of success, I’ve been able to get to this point by staying original and true to myself. While hip hop is becoming more cookie-cutter as time goes on, I like to make songs that could be a breathe of fresh air like my single “Like Me” featuring ShyneDon.

HCM. When did you know that you were going to make music a career?
B McKie. I am still currently a full-time student and work full time along with doing Music. I go to school and work to make more money so that I can advance my music career. I knew music was something I wanted to make a career when I was 16 years old. My second performance was at my school in front of 2400 students and I felt no pressure at all. Music has always felt like being at home to me.

HCM. What musical influences did you listen to growing up helped to mold you into the artist you are today?
B McKie. My two biggest musical influences growing up definitely were Kanye West and Meek Mill. Growing up minutes away from Philly you had no choice but to see the uprise of Meek Mill. The passion, hunger & adversity he had to go through to make It was an inspiration to everyone watching. Kanye West has always been a musical genius to me as well. Always willing to push the needle musically even before the culture Is ready for It.

HCM. On your current/upcoming album… How did you come up with the concept for this project?
B McKie. My current project “Kings Crown Themselves” stems from the realization as I’ve gotten older that no matter what you do you will never receive the full credit for It. A lot of us wait around for a gatekeeper in the industry to say we are the hottest next artist for us to actually believe It. Kings Crown Themselves is self-explanatory, real bosses don’t wait for another man/woman to crown them, they crown themselves.

HCM. What are some of your greatest challenges as an artist, and what is your greatest attribute when it comes to your work ethic?
B McKie. One of my greatest challenges is straddling the line between branding myself as an artist, while still being able to always give my fans in the moment art around how I feel. I want my fans to know when to come to my catalog, but a lot of the time my music is heavily dependent on the mental space I’m in. When It comes to my work ethic, I always believe in taking the extra mile that other artists won’t while pushing me ahead of them in the long run.

HCM. What do you think your “biggest break” or “greatest opportunity” has been so far in your musical career?
B McKie. My biggest break has by far been my single “Mike Bealer” getting premiered on Power 99 FM & then receiving a shoutout from Soulja Boy. I am forever thankful to DJ Diamond Kuts for that opportunity.

HCM. What impression would you like listeners to be left with after hearing your music?
B McKie. I would like my music to inspire all of the underdogs in the world. I was the young kid no one believed could do anything special in life. I want my music to inspire one of those kids to turn their likes around and go be great.
