GTO sells for $52 million

Words Mechell Lilly

Ther's been confusion on who's involved, but the price is an all-time Record
A Ferrari 2506GT0 is reported to have Sold for $52 million, the highest known price paid for a historic car.
Athough the reaction was that the report was incorrect or exaggerated, it does now seem as though the figure is reasonably accurate, even though the vendor had been named incorrectly by some sources. In fact, the car was sold by an anonymous Spanish collector, who is thought to have bought it in 2008 from its previous tong-term owner Paul Pappatardo of Greenwich, Connecticut. He bought the GTO, chassis number 5111GT, in 1974 and had it restored soon after. He went on to use it regularly in historic racing and tours.
From new, 5111GT was campaigned by gentleman racer Jean Guichet, who raced as a privateer and as a Ferrari works driver, winning the 1964 Le Mans in a later-specification GTO. In 5111GT Guichet won the 1963 Tour de France and the 1964 and '65 runnings of the Ratlye Neige et Glace.
The car was later owned by, among others, Road & Track journalist Henry Manney III.
The previous highest known prices for GTOs were the $35,000 paid for the ex-Stirling Moss car and the £20.2- million car sold by Foxtons estate agent founder Jon Hunt, both in 2012.
Although record prices always set alarm bells ringing, there's no sign of the demand stowing down for the 250GTO, of which just 36 were built between 1962 and '64.
