Amelia Island Concours Highlights Mid-Engine Corvette History

For a proper 25th Anniversary, this year’s Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance highlighted mid-engine Corvette history. As a native of this tiny barrier island, I have watched Bill Warner’s small gathering evolve to rival Pebble Beach in attendance and significance. Realizing over six decades of Corvette development, Chevrolet stepped up to showcase each step that led to the C8 Stingray.

Amelia Island is no stranger to the Plastic Fantastic, even I have owned four examples here over the years. Not only does the 25th Anniversary of this show make me feel a little old, the world got a glimpse of Zora Duntov’s dreams become reality. Back in 2003, the lobby of the Ritz-Carlton hotel was the first time all 5 original Grand Sports were together in one location and we thought that would never be overshadowed.

2020 Amelia Island Concours Recap

In terms of significance, this year we saw Corvette Experimental Research Vehicles (CERV I & Cerv III) along with the 1968 Astro II. However, the most rewarding part of the show was seeing the new Corvette in person. Amelia Island is how I first experienced the world’s best car magazine in person, and it led me to the best career I could ask for.
