Despite having a slightly daft name, the Big Nugget will be a logical addition to Ford’s camper van range. It has just been unveiled in concept form at the 2019 Düsseldorf Caravan Salon, although the production version (which should arrive in the first half of next year) is unlikely to be very different.

Like the existing Transit Custom Nugget and Nugget Plus, the Big Nugget has been developed in collaboration with Westfalia. Of course, using the much larger Transit L3 H3 as a starting point yields various space advantages, including 2.05 metres (6’ 8”) of standing height inside. Overall length is a manageable 5.98 metres (19’ 7”).


The Big Nugget has an entirely conventional interior layout. Two rotating front seats form a dinette with the rear reclining bench, while opposite is a basic kitchenette that features a two-burner gas hob, a sink and a refrigerator.


There’s no need to rely on camp site facilities, thanks to the built-in wash room’s shower, basin and toilet. The intention is to fit fresh- and waste-water tanks with capacities of 100 litres (22 gallons) each.


A transverse double bed can be found at the back of the vehicle. Its ample cold-foam mattress measures 2.00 metres (6’ 6”) long by 1.54 metres (5’ 0”) wide at the head end and 1.31 metres (4’ 3”) wide at the foot end. During the day, one half can be folded up to provide extra storage capacity.


The front-wheel drive Transit Big Nugget is going to be powered by a 2.0 litre EcoBlue TDCi diesel engine, but the output has yet to be decided.
