Creating a supercar exclusively for circuit use must be a refreshingly restriction-free experience for manufacturers. After all, there’s no need to make it street legal, plus racing homologation rules don’t apply.
That’s the approach taken by Ford for the new GT Mk II. Developed and built in collaboration with Multimatic Motorsports, this limited edition boasts more power and better aerodynamics than the regular model.
The most obvious addition is the huge rear wing. Together with a redesigned splitter and diffuser, the result is a significant increase in downforce.
To achieve weight savings of over 90 kg (198 lbs), 19” forged aluminium wheels are fitted, a passenger seat is optional and both the drive mode and variable ride height functions have been deleted. An enhanced chassis specification does include Michelin Pilot Sport GT tyres, Brembo carbon ceramic brakes and five-way adjustable DSSV dampers, though.
Output from the twin-turbo 3.5 litre EcoBoost V6 engine has been raised to 700 bhp (522 kW / 710 PS), which is delivered via a recalibrated seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. To deal with any potential overheating issues, the GT Mk II gains a roof-mounted air intake and a high-capacity air-to-air charge cooler with an automatic water spray feature.
A couple of downsides exist, unfortunately. Firstly, prices start at US$1,200,000 (around £958,000 or €1,069,000 at current exchange rates). Secondly, only 45 examples are going to be produced. Multimatic Motorsports will handle all sales via a dedicated web site.
