Civic Type R ‘Project P’ pick-up revealed

Honda’s Swindon-based Product Engineering team has created a one-off Civic pick-up truck. Named ‘Project P’, it was originally a pre-production Type R hatchback that was presumably just sitting at the factory gathering dust.

As well as chopping off the roof aft of the B pillars, the conversion involved welding the rear doors shut, modifying the tailgate and adding an articulating mechanism to the huge rear spoiler. The modest load space is lined with deck plate, while a hefty roll bar probably helps to restore some of the lost structural strength.

None of the powertrain components have been altered, so ‘Project P’ should be very rapid thanks to a turbocharged 2.0 litre engine that delivers 315 bhp (235 kW / 320 PS) via a six-speed manual transmission. Indeed, Honda might even attempt to set a new Nürburgring Nordschleife record for front-wheel drive pick-ups.

A production version isn’t planned, unsurprisingly.
