Vulgar Display of Power: The 2020 BMW X6 M

There are a few vehicles that, despite their ugliness, uselessness, and sheer unnecessity, end up becoming impressive. The Ford F-150 Raptor is an example of this. On its own, the F-150 is as obvious a cry of impotence as open-carrying. Yet, give it a ridiculous amount of power and turn into what’s essentially a drift truck, and, yeah, fair enough.

That godawful BMW X6 runs with this concept. Looking like something that can only be described in language that’s no longer appropriate in 2019, it’s a design nightmare. Worse, it attracts the worst kind of buyer (*cough*BMW drivers*cough*.)

However, run it through the M magic house and, whaddayaknow?, it’s something we here at the ‘Clutch can get on board with. Does it justify the crossover’s existence? Of course not. But it does make it interesting.

Should the 2020 BMW X6 M Exist? Of Course Not. But it’s Still Kinda Neat

With that come details on the 2020 BMW X6 M. While the previous model offered an already unnecessary 567hp and 533lb-ft of torque, the new one is even more ludicrous. Its twin-turbo V8 produces an absolutely unneeded 600 hp and 533 lb-ft. And if you really don’t want to admit that your hairline’s receding, the Competition package bumps the horsepower up to 617.

It’s a wonder they even bother with the regular X6, what with its pitiful 523 hp. Sure, driving that will advertise that you’re not quite stable, but you won’t inspire the level of respect reserved for those who have gone full-blown looney-tunes the way the M version does.

That such obviously desperate people can push a 5000 lbs vehicle from 0-60 mph in 3.7 seconds is surely a sign of our dominance over the natural world. Or at least a sign that maybe a marginal tax rate’s just the start of a larger conversation. But it’s definitely one of those two things.
