2019 Paris E-Prix / Formula E SEASON GUIDE

Here’s a little guide to the Formula E 2018-2019 season.

It’s already the fifth season of Formula E, the championship comprises 22 drivers and 11 teams and its calendar contains 13 rounds.

Just like in Formula 1, Formula E consists of two titles, one for drivers, the other for teams. The points attribution is the same as in Formula 1 for the first 10 to cross the finish line, though, there are 3 points to obtain for getting Julius Baer Pole Position and one point for the fastest lap of the race if the driver is in a top 10 position at the end of the race, if not, the point will go to the driver in the top 10 with the next fastest lap.

At nearly each round, a shakedown session takes place the day before the main event. Each round has two practice sessions. Qualifying is splitted in two parts. First, drivers are divided into four groups of up to six cars, defined by their position in the championship. Then, the six fastest drivers take part in the Super Pole shoot-out to get Julius Baer Pole Position. The E-Prix in itself lasts 45 minutes, when they are up and the winner has crossed the finish line, there’s still one lap to go before the race finishes.

This season saw the arrival of Attack Mode. By going off the racing line, on a particular spot of the track defined in advance (called the Activation Zone), drivers will collect an extra 25kW of power. They can use this extra power when they want once they got it and it lasts for a few laps.
There’s also Fan Boost which gives the opportunity to the fans to take part in the race in a way ! Fans vote for the driver they want to see getting the Fan Boost on a race and the five drivers with the most votes get it. Fan Boost is a significant burst of power. Drivers can use it in a five-second window during the second half of the race.

In Formula E, most of the races take place in a single day but some events stretches to two days. On these occasions, schedules are mirrored from each day with only one practice session on the second day.

On a technical aspect, each driver can’t use more than four new rear and four new front tyres from the beginning to the end of the event.

About the charge of the cars, charging is forbidden during qualifying and the race but also through parc ferme and scrutineering. The cars can be charged in-between sessions and during practice.
