A wild an chaotic Bristol Spring race – the first back on pavement since 2020 – saw Denny Hamlin fend of teammate Martin Truex Jr. for his first win of 2024 and his 4th overall at the fastest half-mile track on the Nascar Cup Series calendar. The entire Joe Gibbs Racing stable dominated the entire race, continuing a trend that started in Phoenix, as the Toyota squad looks to capitalize on Chevrolet’s recent lack of form

Tire management was the name of the game on Sunday as drivers fought for a total of 54 lead changes over 500 laps – the most ever for a Cup Series short track – with Hamlin on top by just 1.083 seconds to Truex Jr. Ford’s Brad Keselowski took the third position ahead of Hendrick teammates Alex Bowman and Kyle Laron – the only other drivers remaining on the lead lap at the checkered flag.

However, the tires were the talk of the race as the concrete surface of Bristol’s high banking shredded tires, leaving the entire top of the track un-raceable as it accumulated rubber over the event. Drivers began having issues as the track ate through the outer layers to the cords of the tires, essentially forcing every team and driver to adopt extreme methods to save tires during the race.

At the end though, Hamlin, who grew up on short track racing like this, was well equipped to handle the challenge and dominated once again.
