NASCAR: Byron ’24 revenge tour starts with victory in Daytona

William Byron, driver of the No. 24 Axalta Chevrolet, leads Alex Bowman, driver of the No. 48 Ally Chevrolet, to the green flag to start during the NASCAR Cup Series Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway.

Fresh off the heels of a near-perfect 2023 campaign – missing only the championship by a single place in the season finale – William Byron started his year and Hendrick Motorsports 40th Anniversary year with victory in a rain-delayed 2024 edition of the Great American Race.

Byron’s first 500 victory comes ten years after Hendrick’s last at the hands of Dale Earnhardt Jr., coincidentally during the organizations 30th Anniversary season. With the win, Byron has now won two of the four premier events on the NASCAR schedule, having secured the Southern 500 victory in 2023. With NASCAR heading back to the oval in Indy Byron is primed for a strong season after his breakout year in 2023.

Teammate Alex Bowman nearly claimed victory over the 24 as the field crossed the start finish line, but as cars wrecked behind the Hendrick duo, caution lights flew before the 48 could take the lead.

Polesitter Joey Logano and 2023 Champion Ryan Blaney saw both of their days end as they were caught up in “The Big One” with 9 laps to go as Bowman forced his teammate Bryon into the #6 of Brad Keselowski, unleashing a chain of carnage that saw 22 cars involved and lead to a red flag with Ross Chastain in the lead.

Daniel Suárez, driver of the No. 99 Freeway Insurance Chevrolet, Brad Keselowski, driver of the No. 6 Castrol Edge Ford, Joey Logano, driver of the No. 22 Shell Pennzoil Ford, Todd Gilliland, driver of the No. 38 gener8tor Ford, Chase Briscoe, driver of the No. 14 Mahindra Tractors Ford, and Daniel Hemric, driver of the No. 31 Cirkul Chevrolet, spin after an on-track incident during the NASCAR Cup Series Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway.

With the field gathered up, the green flag flew with 4 laps to go as Chastain led the field. With 8 Chevrolet’s in the top 10, the strength of the bowtie kept Chastain, Byron, Elliott, Bowman, and AJ Allmendinger in the mix as Penske’s Austin Cindric – the 2022 Daytona 500 victor – threatened to take the lead. As the field came to the tri-oval for the final time, Ross Chastain gathered a run and made a leap to take the lead and came up short as he collected the #2 of Cindric and brought out the final cation to end the race. With Byron ahead of Bowman by a nose, the Hendrick organization finally secured that long elusive victory.
