Josef Newgarden is finally an Indy 500 winner.

The two-time series champion finally added the elusive 500 to his resume, cementing himself in the history books as he added to team owner Roger Penske’s tally of victories in the Great American Race, winning the 19th Borg-Warner for the organization in his 12th attempt.

With a final red flag coming on lap 196, Newgarden was scored 2nd behind 2022 race winner Marcus Ericsson and it was assumed the race would end under caution as there wouldn’t be enough laps to complete the race under green with the debris on the front stretch, however, IndyCar used a little know force-majeure clause to setup the race to finish with a 2-lap white/checkers finish. As the field went green on lap 200, Newgarden had a single lap to try for his chance at victory. With a run off turn 2, Newgarden swooped past Ericsson and snaked his way down the front stretch as he held on to take the checkered flag a scant 0.0974 seconds ahead of the Swede.

As he parked his #2 Shell Chevrolet on the famed bricks, Newgarden emerged from his cockpit and bee-lined into the crowd to celebrate with some of the over 350,000 fans in attendance as his team climbed the fence to a rousing ovation.

Following Newgarden and Ericsson, the #14 AJ Foyt entry with Santino Ferrucci at the wheel brough home an impressive 3rd place result ahead of pole-sitter Alex Palou and 2016 race winner, Alexander Rossi.

With the month of May complete, IndyCar heads to the Streets of Detroit for the first time since leaving Belle Isle in 2022.
