The Worst Grid of the Last Decade

1. Mercedes AMG -  Rio Haryanto and Narain Karthekeyan

Wow. When they say anyone could win in a Mercedes, this lineup really pushes it. It would be interesting to see if the theory holds true... but at the same time I can only imagine these two making the Mercedes car look like a giant fish out of water.

2. Red Bull Racing -  Roberto Merhi and Christian Klien

Red Bull actually gain the luxury of working with a driver they've had before. Klien drove for them in the early stages of what is now title-contending Red Bull Racing. Unclear if either of them has the pace to take it to Mercedes, but compared to Red Bull's current lineup: Albon would be chuffed to be here.

3. McLaren F1 - Will Stevens and Max Chilton

An all-British outfit for an all-British team. As for Max Chilton, well, long-time readers of the blog will know his history on this site. If not, check it out here: Link. That aside, these two represent maybe the strongest teammate pairing, as little as that says. Maybe their collective friendship will help them drive the car faster.

4. Racing Point -  Roberto Merhi and Sergey Sirotkin

Both of these drivers exemplify what people mean when they say they hate pay drivers. In that way, it's only fitting that this duo lines up for Racing point on this terrible grid. There's not much to say about either frankly, other than they could drive quickly. Ooh burn.

5. Renault - Jerome D'Ambrosio and Bruno Senna

Something feels viscerally wrong about typing the word 'Senna' in a 'worst-of' list, but alas... Ayrton's cousin did not live up to the hype in F1. Constantly hitting barriers and being out-qualified by his teammate, Senna is far from a mainstay in the F1 canon. As for D'Ambrosio? Well, just watch this.

6. Scuderia Ferrari - Nicolas Latifi and Alexander Rossi

The North-Americans invade Ferrari with their bottom-20 of the 2000s outlook. Rossi had a lot of potential when he joined the sport, but since he did, times did not get better. He never got his shot in F1, and frankly as hard as it is to admit it, it would be very difficult to argue he deserved it.

7. AlphaTauri - Sakon Yamamoto and Karun Chandhok

Am I being overly generous to Karun Chandhok because of his current affable F1 content-making personality? Maybe. But bringing up the name Sakon Yamamoto to decade-old fans of the sport certainly won't conjure up any good memories. This team seems doomed to fail, but maybe Red Bull will promote one of them to take the place of their embattled first team lineup. Either way, ew.

8. Alfa Romeo Sauber - Jolyon Palmer and Charles Pic

These two get a bit more credit. While not necessarily the slowest drivers, their time in F1 was both short and unsuccessful. Pic maybe have had more in him in particular, but due to being at the back constantly with Caterham, there wasn't much potential to be shown. Palmer on the other hand, well let's just say it's a good thing he sticks to commentary.

9. Haas F1 Team - Esteban Gutierrez and Jaime Alguersuari

These two were boondoggles on their team throughout their stints in F1. Gutierrez came highly-rated from F2 whereas Alguersuari was a fashion-model who quickly turned his career to DJ-ing after leaving Formula 1. (True story) Neither made an impact. Neither won races, and for Gutierrez, he's lucky to say testing a Ferrari was as close to the front of the field as he ever got.

10. Williams Racing - Vitaly Petrov and Giedo Van der Garde

This last one should be seen with a grain of salt. Picking the last team will be disingenuous to some because of how tight it is to pick the 20th worst driver of the decade. For my money though, the man who got up and sued his team definitely deserves to be on there. As for Petrov, his oil money infused rise to F1 was shown to be based on fragile achievements, and Grosjean and Raikkonen quickly proven how much pace the Renault/Lotus actually had. Tough for them to be on this list. Thanks for reading!

Dis-honorable mentions: Andre Lotterer, Pietro Fittipaldi, Marcus Ericsson
