Best 10 Pre-workout Supplements 2017

Pre-workout supplementation can really be a savior, whether you’re coming into the gym at 6 am after a bad night’s sleep or you’re fresh off a 9-hour shift and feeling dead. There are many benefits to a good pre-workout: stimulation of the central nervous system, reduction in fatigue and the rate of perceived exertion (how difficult an exercise feels), and even increased fat-loss. This article will look at ten of the best pre-workout supplements on the market in 2017.

The Best 10 Pre-Workout Supplements

Each of the following 10 pre workout supplements come from well-known and well-respected companies. We will look at each one individually and demonstrate what makes them special.

APS Nutrition: Mesomorph

APS stands for Advanced Performance Supplements which is based in Georgia, US. They sell all the usual supplements: Creatine, Whey Protein, and Testosterone Boosters. Mesomorph is their pre-workout supplement and it’s really impressive! APS Mesomorph was not only one of the first Fully Dosed Pre-Workout, it was the first that introduced DMAA back into the market. It contains a really high serving of Caffeine (though they label it as Methylxanthine Anhydrous to make things confusing), DMAA, Creatine, Citrulline Malate and Arginine. This is a ridiculously hardcore pre-workout.

Flavour-wise Mesomorph is fantastic with 7 to choose from and Pineapple being particularly good. If you want a pre-workout that tastes nice, delivers a massive hit to your CNS and offers a superior pump then Mesomorph by APS Nutrition is the one for you.

Kaged Muscle: Pre-Kaged

Kaged Muscle is a supplement line run by world-famous bodybuilder Kris Gethin, and this pre-workout represents everything about Kris as a person. Loud, brash, and aggressive. There has clearly been a lot of thought put into this supplement, and the complete transparency that the company has regarding its ingredients is commendable.

There is 274mg of caffeine per serving that comes from green coffee beans (plus an undisclosed amount of caffeine from green coffee extract & green tea extract), there is also capsaicum which is quite effective as a fat-burner. In addition to a fully dosed N.O (pump) ingredients, Pre Kaged, brings in creatine and BCAAs which all in all result in an excellent pre-workout. Kris has also added Coconut water and B-Vitamins to the supp.

Taste-wise you only get the option of fruit punch or apple, so hopefully you enjoy those flavors! Mixability is average with some reviewers complaining of grittiness whilst drinking. Read our full Kaged Muscle Pre Kaged review.

Cellucor C4 Ultimate

C4 Ultimate by Cellucor is a relative newcomer from the no.1 company in the Pre-Workout space. And since its launch has been getting a lot of great reviews and for the right reasons.  Each serving contains 300mg of caffeine, 6g of Citrulline Malate, 1.5g of Creatine, and many other ingredients. There are 4 flavors to choose from (Icy Blue Razz, Orange Mango, Cherry Limeade, and Strawberry Watermelon) and the mixability is great. C4 Ultimate also contains a good blend of Nootropics to help you with the focus in the gym. Read our full Cellucor C4 ULTIMATE Pre-Workout review.

Jym Pre-Jym

Created by Jim Stoppani the Bodybuilder with the PHD, Pre-Jym was voted pre-workout supplement of the year by Bodybuilding.com in 2016. It is fair to say that Pre Jym is the godfather of the fully dosed pre workouts and really started this category. There is complete transparency with the ingredients, and each one is fully dosed. There’s 300mg of caffeine, 6g of citrulline malate, 6g of BCAAs, 2g of creatine, and 2g of beta alanine. There are 3 flavors available (Cherry Limeade, Orange Mango, and Raspberry Lemonade).

GAT Nitraflex

German American Technologies (GAT) is one of the leading supplement brands with a full blown supplement line. Beyond energy & pump, Nitraflex is designed to help with fat loss, and increase testosterone.

It does this by adding CFB which studies have shown has the ability to boost testosterone. With 325mg caffeine per serving plus  Theanine which reacts well with caffeine. GAT Nitraflex has been able to stand the test of time, and delivers an impressive impact. With 8 flavors available, and positive reviews on taste & mixability across the board you should be good in this department.

Inspired Nutraceuticals DVST8 – White Cut

DVST8 White Cut by Inspired Nutraceuticals is an interesting pre-workout. It contains coconut water (just like Pre-Kaged) and 200mg of caffeine from 3 sources. These are, Caffeine Anhydrous, Caffeine Citrate, and Di-Caffeine Malate. A bunch of ingredients aimed to improve vascularity & pump with fully dosed  L-Citrulline and a perfectly dosed endurance blend withBeta Alanine, and L-Taurine. There are five flavors available (California Gold, Galaxy Pop, Pacific Crush, Peach Sunrise, and Texas Sweet Tea).

Redcon1 Total War

Another new company & brand, launched in late 2016, Redcon1 introduced Total War (what an awesome name) as its first product. Beyond the marketing envelope, Total War by Redcon1 is a great product too with a label to prove it. It contains 6g of Citrulline Malate, 3.2g of Beta-Alanine, 1g Taurine, and an advanced energy & focus blend with 250mg of caffeine, DMHA & Eria Jarenesis. This pre-workout will give you an excellent pump and some serious cognitive benefits (helps with focus). The flavors available are Blue Raspberry, Fruit Punch, Sour Gummy Bear, and Watermelon. Rich Piana’s 5% Nutrition 5150

There aren’t many more divisive figures in the bodybuilding world than Rich Piana, with some loving and some despising the man. But one thing you can’t argue with, his pre-workout is insane! Each serving contains 470mg of caffeine, add to that L-Citrulline, Beta Alanine, L-Taurine, and N-Acetyl L-Tyrosine. If there is one criticism here, it’s that it may actually be too strong. You could probably manage with half a scoop, which instantly doubles the servings per pack. 5150 is available in 4 flavors: Green Apple, Pomegranate, Wild Berry, and Passion Fruit. Read our full Rich Piana 5150 Pre-Workout review.

Iron Addicts – Sidewalk Kraka

Coming from CT Fletcher, one of the biggest fitness figure in the world today, Sidewalk kraka surprised everyone by bringing in one of the best formulas the industry has seen. Fully dosed and some may say overdosed in literally any category that matters. The reason it is not a top 5 on this list is mainly due to the fact that CT totally missed it on flavor. Out of the 3 flavors available, it is fair to say that 2 are on the verge of undrinkable. But if you into function & impact rather than taste, Sidewalk Kraka would be the number 2 player in this list. Read our full Iron Addicts – Sidewalk Kraka review.

Transparent Labs PreSeries BUL

It’s always a pleasure to review supplements from Transparent Labs, because they never fail to fully disclose their ingredients and amounts. They also show scientific backing for each ingredient. You can’t really ask for more from a supplement company. There’s 250mg of caffeine in each serving, 6g of Citrulline Malate, 4g of Beta-Alanine, and BCAAs. There are also ingredients such as sinephrine which increases metabolism and testosterone supporting ingredients.
