Better Fitness = Exercise + Healthy Food + Water + Sleep + Relaxation

The new year calls for new opportunities, new adventures, and most importantly, new goals to be accomplished. For many, that means either continuing or freshly kick-starting a Healthy and active lifestyle. However, if you’re relatively new to the “fitness lifestyle,” you may not what the first steps to take are. Well, we’re here to help.

Keep in mind that these tips won’t necessarily get you ripped, as that will take a lot more time, work, and dedication on your part. Rather, these tips are more for those who are looking to make the first basic steps to live a healthier lifestyle.

1) Exercise Regularly

Although this is never the favorite on the list, it’s one of the most important. Many people around the world don’t get the necessary 30-60 minutes of physical activity their Body needs throughout the day. Escape the mindset that exercising strictly means having to pay and go to the gym everyday. Although this is helpful, there are plenty of other ways you can get your daily dose of exercise throughout the day.

If you’re moving, you’re exercising. Go for a walk around your neighborhood, or take the stairs instead of the elevator. Just get moving. If you do plan on exercising strategically though, make sure that you perform exercises that you will actually enjoy.

If you enjoy sports, consider organizing a pick-up game with your friends or joining an intramural team around your neighborhood. If you’re not too fond of sports, consider joining a yoga or pilates class. If you’re more of the adventure-type, perhaps you can hike a local trail or go bike-riding! Anything that gets your body in motion will greatly improve your health. Just remember to switch it up so that all of your different body parts are active throughout the week!

2) Watch What You Eat

This may be the most obvious one on the list, but it can also be the most difficult for some. The real difficulty for most is breaking bad habits – favorite munchies like potato chips, pizza, candy, soda, popcorn, etc. are hard to break away from. However, you don’t necessarily have to cut them out completely…you just need to cut down on them.

Eat small and nutritious meals throughout the day, and only eat until you are full. Additionally, depending on whether or not your goal is to gain or lose weight, you may also want to consider counting your daily caloric intake. Every food has a certain amount of calories in them, and you may be eating too many or too little without even knowing it. Use this calorie calculator to determine how many calories you should be eating throughout the day to meet your physical goals. And remember, you don’t have to quit eating your favorite foods, you just need to expand your diet for healthy eating and ration out the favorite munchies!

3) Drink More Water

Over 60% of our body is made up of water, so it’s only natural that we should keep it supplied with it as well! The sad truth is that the majority of us don’t get the amount of water our body needs a day, which is suggested to be around 8-10 glasses per day. However, if you strive to help your body get the amount of water it needs, it can have some tremendous health benefits.

Water helps to fill up your stomach a lot more, which in turn leads you to feel more full throughout the day. In fact, drinking more water has actually been proven to aid in weight loss! One hack you can use to see if your body needs more body is to check the color of your pee more often – if it’s colorless, you’re in the clear. However, if it’s more on the dark yellow side, go grab yourself a drink! Consider adding a bit of lime or lemon to your water as well for an extra kick in your flavor and additional vitamins!

4) Sleep

We mean it. Stop bragging that you can run off of 3-4 hours of Sleep and start actually helping your body rather than breaking it down. Not getting enough sleep is the equivalent of leaving your car battery on for an extensive period of time – eventually, the battery is going to malfunction. Plus, when your body doesn’t rest properly, it tends to crave more junk food to replace the lost energy.

Get more sleep so that your body doesn’t feel the need to eat every minute of the day. Not to mention, lack of sleep can also cause premature aging…and we’re sure no one wants that. More sleep = more energy for your body to do daily tasks and exercise throughout the day! Aim for eight hours of sleep to keep your body happy and healthy.

5) Relax

Yes, relaxing can mean sleeping as well, but that’s not all it entails. You may even be getting enough sleep, but not be allowing your body to receive the relaxation it needs. It is impossible to live a healthy lifestyle without enjoying it in the first place.

Relaxing can mean a variety of things for different people. For some, it means going out and enjoying the great outdoors, taking in all of that fresh air and embracing the sun. For others, it could be something as simple as having a glass of tea and enjoying a good book.

Whatever it is, do what you have to do to enjoy your life. Living a happy lifestyle is just as important as living a healthy lifestyle; in fact, it often correlates. So get out there and do what you enjoy most in life! Your body will thank you in the long run.
