#1: That new underwear your mom bought you for your birthday

Your penis is already a harbinger of dirt, sweat, and bacteria. Enclosing it in unnatural fibers like polyester will only make the problem worse. That also goes for too-tight drawers, as these don’t give the penis any air to breathe. All of this sweat and rubbing can lead to a dry, itchy, red penis. Prevent it by wearing looser, cotton or bamboo-fiber underwear. Moisture-wicking bottoms are also ideal so long as they aren’t compressing the penis.

#2: That new laundry detergent that was on sale

Changing up detergents can lead to big costs… to your skin! Laundry detergents are one of the worst offenders when it comes to fragrance, phosphates, various surfactants, and more – all of which can lead to redness, rash, and irritation. Manufacturers are not required to list all ingredients and can use phrases like “fragrance,” which can be a placeholder for any number of chemicals.

Over two-thirds of laundry detergents contain something called 1,4-Dioxane, which is a highly toxic chemical used to make detergents softer and sudsier. All of these chemicals can be very quickly absorbed by the skin, not only causing penile irritation, but also much more serious side effects, as well. The best way to fix or avoid this is always do a trial run to see if a single piece of clothing washed in the new detergent is irritating and to try to buy the most natural, transparent brand you can.

#3: That new soap you just bought

Maybe it was on sale, or someone told you it was full of super ingredients for your skin, but now you’re looking at Penis Irritation. This could be a result of contact dermatitis. Any time you switch products, you should do a 24-hour patch test to ensure none of the ingredients are too harsh for the skin. Soaps and body washes have ingredients that can cause a number of skin issues. If your new soap is to blame for the irritation, rinse the area thoroughly with water and use a mild, fragrance-free cleanser like CeraVe or a natural baby wash for daily cleansing.

#4: You didn’t rinse well in the shower

Even if you are using a mild cleanser or body wash, if any residue remains on the skin, it can cause irritation. Leaving soap on your body or face can lead to dryness, soreness, and inflammation. If it’s a chronic problem, it can also trigger harder-to-remedy issues like eczema. Make sure you spend about twice the time rinsing as you do washing, and you should be good.

#5: You haven’t been moisturizing often enough or with the right type of lotion for “down there”

The penile skin is delicate. Not moisturizing your skin or using the wrong kind of moisturizer can lead to clogged pores, dryness, acne, skin inflammation, and a loss of sensitivity. Be sure to moisturize the area with a penis health crème (health professionals recommend Man 1 Man Oil, which has been clinically proven safe and mild for skin). This crème contains a natural moisturizing base to nourish and calm the penile skin. The addition of vitamins A, B, C, and D also helps in skin-soothing, elastin creation, antibacterial defense, and cell regeneration properties. Use once or twice per day for best results.
