Penile Bruising: How to Identify It and How to Treat It

Bruises aren’t just for knees and eyes. Bruises can also happen on the Penis and do with some regularity. Most times, penile bruises aren’t a big deal and just need a little TLC. However, there are times when bruises are more than just a bump. Hematomas, the next level of bruises, are quite serious and need immediate attention. Let’s take a look at symptoms for bruises, how to distinguish a bruise from a hematoma, how to prevent bruises on the penis, and how to treat them if you have them already.

Symptoms of a Bruised Penis vs Symptoms of a Hematoma

Bruises, or contusions, of the penis are caused when blood vessels in the penis are either damaged or broken from some sort of impact or blow received to the area. The bruise manifests as a result of blood leaking from the vessels into the penile tissue.

Here are some common things to look for:

  • Raised bump that is tender to the touch
  • A bluish, purplish, or even greenish hue to the affected area
  • Dull aching when flaccid
  • Minor pain when erect

A hematoma is a bruise to the nth degree and needs to be medically addressed as soon as possible.  If your bruise has one or more of the below symptoms, it could be a hematoma:

  • Is lumpy to the touch
  • Blood is pooling beneath the bruised skin
  • Is dark purple-red
  • Increased or heightened pain when flaccid or erect

If you believe you have a hematoma, see a doctor immediately, as it could signal a very serious loss of blood flow.

 Causes of a Bruised Penis

  • Injury or Accidents – Things like car accidents, sports mishaps, and plain old clumsiness can all result in a penile bruise. If you’ve experienced one of these injuries, be sure to get a thorough checkup if you see anything pop up. Sometimes it’s just a bump; other times, it can be more serious.
  •  Cycling and Horseback riding – All of that time in the saddle can lead to bruising among others issues like loss of sensitivity. Be sure you’re giving yourself enough downtime between rides and use the most comfortable seat/saddle you can to reduce the possibility of injury or bruising.
  •  Kinky or Athletic Sex – According to a recent survey, 40 percent of Americans would classify themselves as “kinky.” While kinky is one very large umbrella for thousands of things, there are quite a few of the more “mainstream” types of kink that can result in a bruised penis. These includethe use of sexual toys and BDSM. Some people also like to play a little rougher or get more intense and acrobatic with sexual congress. This can also result in more opportunities for penile trauma and bruising. If you fall into this category, pay attention to things like intensity, moderation, and communication to make this pleasurable experience bruise-free.
  • Masturbation – Self-love is a wonderful sexual expression, a way to relieve stress, and also, let’s face it, get some zzz’s. However, men who masturbate too often, without lube, or with too tight of a grip can find themselves with bruises on their penis. Loosen up the grip, use a quality lube, and practice moderation and you should have no issues in the self-gratification department.

How to Treat a Bruised Penis

Overwhelmingly, inactivity and rest is the best way to treat bruised penile tissue. It needs time to repair and rejuvenate naturally. Take a time out from all penis-related activities and be sure to protect it in the face of any potentially damaging moments. For the day-to-day, ibuprofen and compresses can help pacify the pain and bring down swelling. Be sure to alternate cool and warm compresses to help relax the blood vessels and clean out the damaged cells.

Many men also find that applying a specially formulated penis health crème  (health professionals recommend Man 1 Man Oil, which has been clinically proven safe and mild for skin) can also help in healing. This type of crème provides vitamins and nutrients like vitamins A, B5, C, D, and E topically to promote renewal and cellular turnover. They also promote healthy blood flow to help remove damaged cells and make way for new ones.
