Are We Going Back to Our “Normal” Lives?

Since February of 2020, the world has been in a state of panic about the Coronavirus. Country by country, the world was shutting down with the hopes of keeping the coronavirus at bay. For 3 months, social distancing was accepted by all, but as time went on, protests started and people were fighting for their chance to get back out into the world and open business. Throughout May, people in the US have started phases to open businesses. So, are we going back to our “normal” lives?

Is the Curve Flattening?

According to the Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Research Center the number of cases have actually been going down since the peak in April but the numbers are still nearing 20,000 new cases a week. As quarantine regulations are letting up, America will likely know within the next month if it is really safe to go back into the world.

Where are We Now?

After spending the last few months in quarantine, there are some people who are ready to get back to a “normal life”. So even though the curve has not nearly flattened, states across the country are starting to phase back into reopening. The beginning of phases generally started with 25% of business occupancy. Now, many states are heading into their third phase where gyms, bars, and even clubs are opening back up.

In other states, there is a push back on reopening business. LA County has already declared quarantining until at least July. As other counties in the state of California open back up, a spike in new covid-19 cases has surged. Due to this, they are “scaling back” the opening of businesses.

A New Normal

It is pretty apparent that the country does not want another shut down. So as death rates rise, it is on individuals to protect themselves from the coronavirus. Wearing masks in public and staying in when possible are still encouraged. The spread of the coronavirus has not stopped, and until there is a cure, it will not.

As more businesses open back up, people are becoming more careless about going out. There have been more than 1.7 MILLION cases in the United States alone. Please be cautious when going out, even if you are not afraid of getting the virus, you could be a carrier to others who are at risk.

In 1918, the last major pandemic in America struck. The Spanish Influenza Pandemic cost 50 million lives and doctors worry that after the summer months, the coronavirus will see another spike. As people start flooding the streets, going to gyms and restaurants, we must be careful about spreading the virus. When we look at history, the Spanish Influenza came back worse, and had an even higher death toll.

So, are we going back to our “normal lives”? And when? Only time will tell when we will find a cure for the coronavirus and get it tested and FDA approved. In the mean time, we live in a new normal. Now social distancing is required in all public spaces and masks are encouraged. Because of this virus, the world has changed, and we will spend the foreseeable future adjusting to these changes.
