8 Things To Do Now If You Live in a Snow-Prone Area

If you live in a Snow-prone area, you’ll most certainly be expecting some soon if you haven’t already. There are many things you regularly do to help navigate in the snow such as checking your heating, insulating your home and stocking up on supplies should the snowfall be particularly heavy. Let’s take a look at some other things you should be doing if you live in a snow-prone area.

Buy snow gear

If the snowfall is very heavy, there’s a good chance you may still have to venture out. Whether that’s to get to work or to buy more supplies, you’ll need an effective method of transport. If the car is snowed in and buses aren’t running, you’ll need to make sure you’ve got some Snow Gear to travel around. Buy snowshoes to help you easily walk through the snow and ice, and be sure to buy a thick winter coat to keep yourself warm, particularly if you’ve got a fair distance to travel. Sunglasses, a warm hat and gloves are also a nice addition.

Replace your tires

If you live in a country that’s prepared when it comes to snowfall, there’s a good chance you’ll still be able to use your car. Even when roads are gritted and cleared, there’s still a chance that there will still be some snow and ice on the roads. Preparing yourself with super swamper tires will allow you to make your way through the snow and ice with ease and most importantly, safely. Even if they’re not needed for 90% of the year, you can change your old tires as and when needed.

Check for drafts

You may not notice drafts that have formed in your windows and doors during the warmer months, but now is the time to check. You want to be able to keep your home nice and toasty when it’s cold out. If you do find drafts, you can either have them professionally fixed, or, if you’re on a budget, you can buy draft excluders to help prevent any cold air from getting in. In the long run, though, it might be worth putting the money in and getting all drafts sealed permanently.

Get outside with your camera

No matter who you are or how old you are, one thing we can universally agree on as a species is that snow is stunning. Use your free time to go exploring to take some breathtaking pictures and share them online. The fresh air is good for your mind, body and soul, and the takeaway is you are loaded with beautiful winterland imagery that you can enjoy. If you’re a keen photographer, why not see if there are any photography competitions you can enter your pictures in?

Create a winter emergency kit

While you may have stocked up on enough supplies to last for weeks, have you considered the chance that it may snow so much you can’t get out of the house? If this eventuality happens, you need to be prepared. If snow is surrounding your home you’ll need to stock up on extra blankets, medications (both day to day medications and emergency), flashlights, and a way of communicating to the outside world. Should it get so bad you need to be rescued, having a way of getting information outside of your home could save your life, especially if the power has gone down.

Drain your sprinkler system

If you’ve got a sprinkler system, now is the time to drain it completely. If the temperature drops too much, any water left in them could freeze and cause the pipes to burst, giving you another cost to take care of. It’s a good idea to have a professional come and drain the sprinkler system so you can be 100% sure there’s nothing left during the winter season.

Have fun!

Snow days are the perfect opportunity to turn what would have otherwise been a boring day into a fun experience. Make snowmen, do snow angels, and cherish the time you’ve got with those you love. Just don’t forget to wrap up warm!

Be creative in the kitchen

Finally, snow days are the perfect time to get creative in the kitchen. There’s nothing better than a hearty soup or a delicious stew when it’s snowing outside. If you’ve got kids, get them involved in the creation process. While the snow may be a hindrance in some way or another, instead of wallowing in it, you can create cherished memories and traditions for you and your family to enjoy for many years to come.
