The moment I stepped foot off the plane in September 2008, Edinburgh became my home.
Growing up in Hong Kong, filled with tall high rise buildings, 7 million people frenetically
going from one point to another, I longed for a more peaceful, stress-free way of life. My dad
used to tell me all about the rich history of Scotland, how men wore kilts, the beautiful
architecture, and the wonderful national dish. For many years, I longed to visit Edinburgh
which I heard so much about, but also to see glens and lochs that are so much a part of the
Highlands.
This Country has so much to offer by way of nature, culture, politics, and history. As the
capital city of Scotland, Edinburgh has a lot to offer year round, but with a population of
approximately 495 000, it has a more serene pace of life when festivals aren’t in full swing in
August and December. If bustling cities with plenty of shopping, food, and activities, Glasgow
is your city. Prefer the country life with sprawling greens and views of the sea? Take a longer
trip to the Highlands and delight in the peace of rolling waves and wildlife.
I’ve built so many memories in this country, made so many friends and experienced so many
things that I would never have done if I was living in Hong Kong. What other country would
you be able to go skydiving, kickboxing, attend free comedy shows, Spa in the City events,
climb Ben Nevis at night and hop on the steam train Jacobite for a ride, Harry Potter style!
My fondest memory? Claiming my husband’s family tartan for my own...and listening to
bagpipers play classic tunes like Highland Cathedral and Scotland the Brave on street corners!
This is my Scotland; this is my home.
