Do Groomsmen Pay For Their Suits?

When it comes to weddings, there’s a lot of expenses involved and you might find yourself breaking the bank if you don’t plan with a budget. Grooms, we know that it can often get a little uncomfortable to talk about who pays for what with your Groomsmen, especially if you’re already asking friends and family to do a lot for you.

If you’re asking yourself the question “what does the groom pay for?” and feeling the impending effects of a financial freak-out, don’t worry. We’re going to go into detail what your groomsmen should be coughing up for and exactly when it’s your turn to pick up the tab.

Firstly, let’s get into a few other aspects of your wedding that you or your groomsmen will need to cough up the cash for. That way, you and your crew have enough time to save if necessary.

Bachelor party

This type of event can be a big one (and a costly one), spanning over days and making you travel to different cities or even countries. It’s time for the groomsmen to step into the spotlight and plan a bachelor party that the groom will never forget. Depending on what the groomsmen have planned for the groom, the expenses can rack up.

There was a time when the groom didn’t pay a single cent and the groomsmen would evenly split his costs between themselves. This wedding tradition has loosened the noose a bit as bachelor parties have become extravagant, costly endeavors over days  in faraway destinations (we’ve all seen The Hangover.)

The groomsmen will be paying for their own travel expenses and hotel, easing the burden off you in what might already be a stressful time. Also, while the groomsmen might not be paying for your boarding pass and stay, the likelihood is that they’ll be helping you out with drinks, food and entertainment.

Travel expenses and wedding accommodations

Traditionally, you’re not expected to cover travel and boarding costs for the groomsmen. However, if you’ve got the cash in the bank then you and your betrothed may want to consider lending a helping hand to your groomsmen squad.

It’s a good idea to let your squad know the estimated travel and stay costs when you’re in the planning stages of the wedding. This can help to save you and the groomsmen a lot of potential headaches. Also, it gives them time to save for your big day so they don’t have any nasty surprises when they’re hit with the final figures.

Wedding outfits

When you’re throwing a wedding, you want your boys to be dressed to the nines in the finest attire that every dandy gentleman should be wearing. Depending on your budget, the dress code can range from black tie, formal suit dress or cocktail dress attire. You may even have your guests dress in casual attire but it’s not something we usually recommend.

Who pays for the groomsmen suits

Bridesmaids often follow the tradition where the bride picks the look and the bridesmaids pay for it. The same thing happens for the groom and his boys. Whether it’s black-tie, formal or semi-formal attire, by the tradition the groomsmen usually pay for their own suits when buying them outright. As the groom, you’ll have a say in style choices, colors and how smart you want the groomsmen to be dressed. But, ultimately they’ll have to cough up the coin to purchase their own wedding outfits.

Who pays for tux rental in weddings

A classic tuxedo can say a thousand words when worn to a wedding. Rentals are a bit of a grey area, the groom should organize the tuxedo rentals and pay for the rentals if he can afford to do so. Due to rentals being a cheaper option in comparison to buying outright, the groom may also decide to let his groomsmen pick up the rental bill at the suit shop of his choice.

Renting a tux can be a little limiting in terms of accessories. You may find the perfect tux but struggle to find a unique tie that really distinguishes your character and highlights your groomsmen. Even when renting a tux, consider wearing a beautiful butterscotch tie to add a little sweetness to your wedding day. Get your groomsmen to complement this by wearing a contrasting piece like this wedding silver tie.

Wedding expenses

Weddings can be lavish events with costs popping up left, right and center. From fancy floral decorations to dream beach weddings — the costs are no joke. As the groom, it’s okay if you need to let your squad pay for their tuxedos, suits, board and travel expenses but it’s courteous to let your groomsmen know in advance so they can plan and save.
