The second in our series of interviews with independent businesses, today we are speaking to Hannah and Beth who are owners of local coffee shop, Applaud. They’ve had fantastic success in recent years and we thoroughly enjoyed sampling their delicious cakes on our summer photoshoot. Read on to find out how their love of coffee shop culture is making our town more colourful.

When did you start your business?

Our Coffee Shop was born in the summer of 2013.

And it’s been going from strength to strength. How would you describe your business to someone visiting for the first time?

Locally we are known for our speciality coffee, tea and delicious food. All of our cakes and scones are baked on site in our little kitchen and we also serve breakfasts and seasonal lunches. Our customers love to meet friends and sit outside in our courtyard garden. We also host creative workshops, such as a drawing club and card making.

What made you decide to go into this industry?

So what is it about Ipswich town that makes it the perfect place for your business?

We’re set in a street full of independents so people visiting the area value local businesses. The Saints have beautiful buildings with lots of character and, of course, there are plenty of quality food producers locally.

We are fast becoming the foodie county! Why is it so important to shop with independent businesses?

We believe in supporting the local economy. Shopping locally really has an impact on how the town can change and regenerate. Local support is invaluable to a town.

Why do you think your customers choose to shop with you over alternatives?

Our customers enjoy the community feel of our coffee shop. We offer personalised customer service and we really care about the food and drinks we sell!

What local event or development are you most looking forward to?

We’re really looking forward to the monthly farmers markets returning to Corn Hill! We definitely recommend paying it a visit.
