4 simple habits to properly rest your suit for its next wear

Tags: suit rest
Gentlemen, we get it. You've just gotten home - tired, hungry, all that.
You put the keys down, take off your shoes and head to the bedroom to undress and unwind. The bed becomes your suit's makeshift resting place.
If you remember, it goes back into the wardrobe. If you don't, it often finds its way to the nearest and most convenient surface, like the back of a chair.
Your suit, like you, needs to rest though. So here we challenge you to change this habit. By doing the four simple habits when you get home you will dramatically extend the life and appearance of your suit over time.Tools you will need
A quality clothes brush with natural bristlesA well-shaped wooden hangerCedar blockBreathable (canvas or cotton) garment bagVacuum cleanerA spare suit (while the other rests).
Instead of throwing it onto your bed or putting it straight back into the closet, why not give it a quick brush?
The suit should be brushed after every use and prior to storage. Just three minutes is all it takes. It's a great opportunity to collect your thoughts, unwind and, if you have young children, prepare for the great philosophical questions that await you.
Most suits are made from wool or a blend thereof. Wool is a magnet to dust, dandruff, loose hair and other tiny floating debris. In particular, the dust and other organic particles can decay the fibres if not removed. The three-minute brushing ritual is a very important step to maintaining the longevity of the suit.
If you’re unsure how to do this, we’ve got a great guide you can look at. Just take a look at ritual 2 in this series.
A suit should be hung on a broad, well-shaped suit hanger that gives good support to the jacket shoulders and allow the pants to hang for long periods without creasing them. A quality hanger, such as the Butler Luxury hanger discussed below, is a small investment every man should make.
Unfortunately, many of the plastic and timber hangers available to Australian and New Zealand men are designed for scale and not quality. Most hangers on the market will cause the shoulders to fold in, your lapel to lose definition, and your pants to crease; over time it will look like your suit is wearing you.
A suit endures a lot, including your perspiration, the elements, and a great deal of movement.
After a day of action the suit needs a bit of rest and recreation. To rest the suit, use a quality wooden hanger and aim to rotate it after each wear.
If worn on consecutive days, extend the rest time.
Letting the suit air in a nice open space with a bit of light is the recreation it needs to evaporate perspiration and odours and allow it to settle back into shape. After several hours the suit is ready to be placed back home in the wardrobe.
“Fabric pests” such as clothes moths and carpet beetles will, along with their larva, make a meal of our most cherished clothing and then leave without paying their bill.

Their refined taste for quality wool, mohair, cashmere, fur, feathers and down means the wardrobe of a polished gentlemen is like a Michelin five star restaurant.
Regular cleaning and vacuuming in and around the wardrobe is the best prevention against fabric pests. However, if you want to rake extra measures, a breathable canvas or cloth suit bag (avoid plastic) provides additional protection.
Another handy trick is the use of little cedar wood blocks in the wardrobe, which repel moths and absorb excess moisture.
