Cannabis Could Help Treat Diabetes Complications

According to the Health Line, more evidence came out recently to support the theory that Cannabis can help treat Diabetes.

Back in 2005, the original research on the issue was made by the American Alliance for Medical Cannabis ( AAMC ) who found a long list of supposed benefits for cannabis when given to people with diabetes . This list includes:

  • Balancing blood sugar
  • Having properties of anti-inflammation which could stop arterial inflammation
  • Reducing neuropathic inflammation and pain
  • Lowering blood pressure over time
  • Relieving the common diabetic ‘restless leg syndrome’ and allowing patients to sleep better

Furthermore, this evidence has not been refuted; Indeed, it was built on several Studies over the years. In general, the studies agree that cannabis is quite healthy for the body because it affects the endogenous cannabinoid, which is the “most important physiological system involved in the establishment and maintenance of human health,” according to the National Organization for Reform of Marijuana Laws. Apparently, the role that endocannabinoids play differs throughout the body, but the goal is always one and the same: homeostasis, which is the process of maintaining the internal environment body stable regardless of external factors.

Several studies have shown conflicting results in regard to delaying type 2 diabetes; however, research has shown marijuana is very beneficial in the treatment of people with type 1 and 2 diabetes, especially in case of complications. Two studies that have been published, one in 2013 in the American Journal of Medicine and the other in 2014 in the Journal of Natural Medicine, agree on some very surprising benefits of marijuana when it comes to treating diabetes . Some of these results are:

  • Cannabis helps control blood glucose
  • Users are less likely to be obese and have lower BMI and smaller waistlines
  • Users had better fasting insulin and were less insulin resistant
  • Users had shown higher levels of HDL “good cholesterol”

In addition, in 2015 , researchers from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem had also conducted a study on the benefits of marijuana for diabetics. The study showed that cannabidiol anti -inflammatory properties have been effectively used to treat many different illnesses, and on the list was type 2 diabetes.
