Whether you’ve just had a Root Canal Treatment or are preparing to have one, there is some useful information for post-treatment care you should keep in mind. Please be aware that these guidelines include only general information and do not override any direct instructions from Dr. Conard regarding your specific case.
During the first few days after treatment:
- Take 600 mg of Ibuprofen every 4-6 hours as needed to help with pain and swelling.
- If you have been given a prescription for pain medication, carefully follow the instructions for use. Do not drink alcoholic beverages, drive, or operate dangerous machinery while taking pain medication.
- Monitor your temperature for at least 2-3 days after your visit. If you develop a fever or severe pain or swelling, fill your antibiotic prescription. If there is an emergency, please contact (843) 443-7686.
- Wait until your mouth no longer feels numb before eating. This can prevent injury to your cheek or tongue. Eat only soft cold foods for the next hour.
- Brush and floss normally.
- Do not bite or chew with the treated tooth until your restoration has been completed. Try using the opposite side of your mouth instead.
- You may need to return to our office after a few days to adjust your temporary filling.
- Contact your general dentist for an appointment to complete your restoration. This restoration is vital to preventing fracturing or leakage that will cause root canal failure.
Some basic things you should know about your Root Canal treatment:
- Tenderness in the area of the treatment for a few days is normal as your mouth heals.
- Your jaw may be tender for a day or two due to extended time spent held open for treatment.
- These symptoms respond well to over-the-counter medications, when used as directed.
Contact Dr. Conard immediately if you experience any of the following:
- Severe pain or pressure lasting more than a few days
- Visible swelling outside or inside the mouth
- Bite that feels uneven
- Allergic reaction
- Original symptoms return
- Temporary filling comes out
