Give Yourself the Best Chance in Your Hunt

Hunting is a sport that requires many skills. Not only do you have to be a good marksman with a firearm, bow, or whichever weapon you choose to use, but you have to develop many of the other skills that come with Hunting. In this article we are going to pick out some of the tips that we have collected. We hope they are helpful to add to your repertoire and make you an even better hunter.

  1. Slow Down – As anyone who has ever spent time in a deer stand, or duck blind knows, patience is probably the most essential quality of an amazing hunger. There is nothing that will scare away a big buck faster than impatient fidgeting. But the best hunters take their time, moving extra slow, taking extra time to wait. A helpful tip is to use your watch and set a predetermined time to wait and listen before you move.

  2. Never Poke – A lot of times we see hunters walk up to an Animal that they just took down and poke it with their gun, or nudge it with their foot to check and see if the animal is still alive. This is foolish. You don’t want to be so close to an animal that might still startle, jump, or react without allowing you the time to react safely. Instead try tossing small stones or sticks. And if there is still signs of life, fire one more shot under the chin through the throat for a humane kill.

  3. Packing Smart – When Packing for a hunting trip it is important to put a lot of thought and intentionality into the content of your pack. One tip for hunting in wet weather is to pack any items that might be ruined or damaged if exposed to moisture in zip-lock bags. Group your items together in order to keep organized. Also, because building a fire is important, help yourself out by packing easy to light materials before you head out on your hunt. A great example of this is to soak cotton balls in petroleum jelly and then stuff them into a film canister. This will help you start a fire much more easily.

  4. Hunt With Strategy – There are many strategies that a hunter can utilize when trying to take down an animal but there are some things are extremely important and should be adopted, like stopping whenever you make an abnormally loud noise. An animal, like a deer will alertly look around for a long time before returning to whatever it was doing. Or clearing away blind clutter that might cause noise or obstruction to your firing position. Another is picking your landmarks so that regardless of where you start stalking your animal you can know precisely where you are.

These are just a few hunting tips that we hope will equip you to have a more productive and successful season and, in the long run, make you a better hunter.
