Mercy Medical Center – Clinton Recognized as Best Hospital for Obstetrics

Mercy Medical Center, in Clinton, IA was awarded with a 2016 Women’s Choice Award® for being one of America’s Best Hospitals for Obstetrics. Mercy – Clinton joins the ranks of over 400 Award winners, all of whom were recognized for their outstanding strides in providing both female Patient satisfaction and clinical excellence.

Recipients of the award were scored based on their ranking for patient recommendations, as indicated by data from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS). The awardees’ above-average national ranking for Patient Safety was also taken into consideration. Other criteria included having an on-site NICU and maintaining low rates of 0-1% for early elective deliveries.

"We are excited to be named one of America's Best Hospitals for Obstetrics by the Women's Choice Awards," said Sean J. Williams, President and CEO of Mercy Medical Center. "For several years, our OB colleagues have been dedicated to providing the highest quality of care in the safest environment for our patients. Our OB unit has been recognized on the state and national level for our efforts to lead patient safety. Receiving the Women's Choice Award reaffirms our commitment to offer the very best care experience."

“New moms have many choices when it comes to having their baby, so choosing the best birthing experience is right up there with choosing the best doctor. We’ve made it easy for moms to vet out the hospitals proven to deliver an outstanding experience,” says Delia Passi, CEO and Founder of the Women’s Choice Award.

Mercy Medical Center – Clinton began improvements to their Obstetrics Unit in 2009, when they began a multi-faceted Perinatal Patient Safety initiative to review their obstetric policies and procedures. The initiative included deploying five teams that concentrated on assessing and improving areas such as professional practice, fetal assessment, labor induction, second stage labor management, and pain management.

Through the hospital’s efforts, Mercy’s OB colleagues and partnering OB physicians were encouraged to take the national certification in electronic fetal monitoring. The elimination of elective deliveries less than 39 weeks was also implemented to improve safety for both infants and their mothers.

The improvements to Mercy’s OB unit paved the way for them to receive the first Iowa Healthcare Collaborative Patient Safety Award, two Trinity Health Patient Safety Awards, an IONL Nursing Leadership Award, and an opportunity to give a presentation of their initiative at the Hospital Engagement Network in Washington, DC.
