Becton, Dickinson and Company’s (BD) Alaris® System was named Best in Klas for Smart Pumps in the 2015 Best in KLAS: Medical Equipment report on April 24, 2016. According to the report, the leading global Medical Technology Company was perceived to be better positioned for the future in terms of interoperability with electronic medical records (EMRs). Features like patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) and syringe modules for the same pump were also praised by customers. The Alaris System is known as a smart IV pump designed with advanced technology and software that helps clinicians avoid infusion medication errors by alerting them of any infusions that go out of normal range. The system’s modular design is a combination of a single point-of-care unit with Guardrails Suite MX safety software. It features large volume pump(s), patient controlled analgesia (PCA), respiratory monitoring through end-tidal carbon dioxide (EtCO2) and/or, pulse oximetry measurement of oxygen saturation (SpO2), and syringe and barcoding capabilities to help protect every type of infusion.
Infusion order parameters can also be wirelessly pre-populated into the system directly from the hospital’s EHR. In addition, the Alaris System allows for medication orders to be programmed into the unit using barcodes on the patient’s ID band. Because the pump can be automatically programmed from a verified physician order in the EHR, accurate IV medication administration and documentation is ensured and opportunities for human error are reduced.
KLAS actively partners with thousands of health care organizations to monitor health care information technology performance. The organization released a Smart Pump/EMR Integration report earlier this year, rating the Alaris System as the industry leader for interoperability with EMRs.
