Baxter Announces Voluntary Recall of Select IV Solution Lots

Baxter International Inc. recently announced a Voluntary Recall of select Sodium Chloride Injection, USP, Dextrose Injection, USP, and Lactated Ringer’s Injection, USP Lots, attributing to the potential presence of Particulate Matter within these intravenous (IV) solutions. The lots being recalled were distributed to the United States and Bermuda between January 14, 2015 and March 5, 2015.

The Particulate matter was detected during a routine maintenance check by Baxter manufacturing personnel who traced the material back to a solution transmission system Pump. Since the discovery, Baxter began notifying their customers on March 24, 2015 and have directed them not to use the products from the recalled lots. There have been no reports of incidents involving these IV solution lots thus far.

The company warned hospitals and users that without in-line filtration, the particles may cause local vein irritation, inflammatory reaction, aggravation of preexisting infections, allergic reactions, and systematic embolization. According to the company, the extent and severity of harm would depend on the size, number, and composition of the foreign material, as well as the patient’s underlying medical condition. High-risk patients may experience more serious adverse health consequences from intravenous administration of a solution containing sterile particulate matter.

Baxter advised its customers to return the recalled products to the company for credit by contacting the Baxter Healthcare Center for Service at 1-888-229-0001, Monday through Friday, between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., Central Time. Unaffected lots of product are available for replacement.

Clinicians and healthcare providers should not only ensure that the solutions they use are free from particulate matter, but should also keep their medical equipment well-maintained and up-to-date. AIV understands the need for safe and high-quality IV pump equipment and supplies an extensive line of infusion pump solutions including IV pump parts, accessories, and repair services.
