Smiths Medical showcased its latest Infusion syringe pump Software at the 2015 Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS15) Conference in Chicago from April 13 to 16, 2015. The new system, called the PharmGuard Infusion Management Software with Interoperability platform, was on display at the company’s booth within the HIMSS Interoperability Showcase and in the conference’s Intelligent Hospital Pavillion (IHP).

The PharmGuard software was designed to securely distribute updates and drug libraries to infusion devices within a hospital. It also provides clinicians with reporting tools for analyzing trends, comparing compliance goals, and measuring infusion safety to make evidence-based practice decisions.
The software comes with an add-on module that allows for automatic patient information charting within hospital EMR system records. Additionally, it supports auto-charting via Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE) Integration Profiles. The software is also capable of pushing alerts from the Medfusion 4000 syringe pump to alarm management applications using the IHE Alert Communication Management profile.
The Pharmguard Infusion Management Software with Interoperability platform was included in the IHP’s neonatal intensive-care unit (NICU) simulation, which recreated the patient care environment of a premature baby receiving antibiotics and IV fluids. The exhibit demonstrated how a medication order would be sent to an infusion pump via the server software. Through the system, the appropriate dosage would then be programmed into the pump. The system’s alert feature was also demonstrated and showed the audience how notifications would be sent to an alarm manager, along with location information received from a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tracking system.
