The Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) Foundation will be partnering up with the General Electric (GE) Foundation to develop a new training model for biomedical equipment technicians (BMETs) in developing countries.
The two foundations will be working together to create a scalable, time- and cost-effective training model that teaches skilled personnel how to properly repair and maintain medical equipment.
Current BMET training protocols in developing countries will be studied by the AAMI Foundation with the help of other stakeholders. Through this, the organization hopes to identify key players such as students, ministries of health, nongovernmental organization, and trainers who can provide information on the successes and challenges of existing practices.
Meanwhile, the GE Foundation has been working with Engineering World Health (EWH) through its Developing Health Globally campaign to identify trainers in resource-poor areas. In a statement released by the GE Foundation, it was discovered that a majority of laboratory and medical equipment in developing countries were either partially or completely out of service.
The two organizations will be presenting their new model during a stakeholder meeting on June 11 to 12, 2015 in Toronto, Canada, alongside the 2015 International Union for Physical and Engineering Sciences in Medicine (IUPESM) World Congress on Medical Physics & Biomedical Engineering. A meeting summary will be released in August, with a final report to be published in the fall.
Through this initiative, the AAMI and GE Foundations hope to create a professional network for BMETs to connect throughout the developing world and beyond. BMES to Hold 2015 Student Design Competition
The deadline for entries to the Biomedical Engineering Society’s (BMES) 2015 Student Design Competition will be closing on May 25, 2015. All BMES undergraduate student members are encouraged to enter. The top six proposals will be chosen and winners will be given the opportunity to present their work at the BMES 2015 Annual Meeting.

HTMA-SC Hosts Annual Conference

AAHE Hosts Annual Meeting and Trade Show
The Arkansas Association for Healthcare Engineering (AAHE) hosted its 50th Annual Meeting and Trade Show on May 6 to 8, 2015 at the Arlington Resort Hotel and Spa in Arkansas. The meeting featured several discussions on clinical, facilities, and safety, topics followed by the trade show on May 7, 2015.

ALaSHE Hosts Spring Conference
The Alabama Society for Healthcare Engineering (ALaSHE) hosted its Spring Conference on May 13 to 15, 2015 at the Hilton Pensacola Beach Gulf Front in Florida. The three day event featured discussions on the latest rules, regulations, and codes in the biomedical industry. New products and services were also featured in the conference’s Technical Exhibition.
