Paaapapapapapaapaaapapapapapaaapaaa... I love trumpets. Ok, on a serious note, this blog will be dealing with epilepsy (obviously), what can be done to treat the condition and how Osteopathy can play a role in management.

Epilepsy is defined as a tendency to have recurrent seizures caused by a sudden burst of excess electrical activity in the Brain. This causes a temporary disruption in normal messaging between cells in the brain, causing the messages to halt or become mixed up. As the brain is responsible for all bodily functions, the seizure experience will vary depending on where in the brain the epileptic activity begins, and how rapidly and widely it spreads. It is for this reason that there are many types of seizures experienced by epileptics.

Epilepsy is usually treated with anti-epileptic Drugs. These drugs act on the brain, trying to prevent seizures occurring, and are often successful. In the instances where the drugs have little or no effect, other techniques, such as vagus nerve stimulation can be implemented.

Anti-epileptic drugs may cause some to develop Bone diseases such as osteoporosis and osteomalacia. Osteoporosis is a disease that causes the bones to become fragile, and reduce in bone density, leading to an increased risk of fractures. Osteomalacia is a disease that causes softening of the bones, causing muscle weakness and bone pain, also increasing the risk of fractures. These diseases can occur as the drugs can reduce the levels of vitamin D in the body.

Those with epilepsy have a higher than average risk of broken bones or fractures, and the following can increase the risk:
  • having a fall during a seizure
  • taking anti-epileptic drugs
  • post-menopausal women
  • older men
  • decreased exposure to sunshine
  • physical disability

Osteopathy can also have a part to play in the treatment of epilepsy. A study in Russia showed that decompression of the spheno-basilar symphysis, membranous techniques and venous sinus techniques showed positive effects in 91.7% of participants.

If you suffer from epilepsy, osteoporosis or osteomalacia, or are unsure whether osteopathy can help, it may be worthwhile coming to see us at Hashim Saifuddin Osteopathy, where we can explain your problems to you, why they occur and whether or not you are suitable for osteopathic treatment. Often this can be done via email or on the phone.
