Best Vitamins To Help Heal Your Thyroid When You Have Hashimotos Disease

Best vitamins to help heal your Thyroid when you have Hashimotos thyroid disease. What the research shows about healing your Thyroid with vitamin D, Selenium and zinc. When it comes to thyroid disease it’s important to remember that the number one cause of hypothyroidism in the United States is Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. That means if you have been diagnosed recently or in the past, chances are you have this autoimmune condition and don’t know it.

Research is showing certain triggers, including deficiencies in vitamin D, selenium and zinc can increase your risk for developing Hashimotos. The good news is that research also shows that by correcting these vitamins deficiencies, it can have a profound impact on progression of this disease.

Today, I want to talk about some of the vitamins that help heal hashimotos, why you should be taking them as well as how they will help you.

The vitamins I will be talking about today can not only help prevent hashimotos but they have even been shown to delay progression of hashimotos and they do this by affecting the inflammatory pathways in your body and balancing the immune system. Whenever you have inflammation or an imbalance in the immune system, you are more prone to experience a flare up of your thyroid symptoms.

Vitamin D Helps Hashimotos Thyroid disease

So number one on my list of vitamins that support your thyroid when you have hashimotos thyroid disease is vitamin D. Vitamin D does much more than support your bones, Vitamin D helps your immune system in a number of ways. Optimizing your vitamin D levels can balance the Th1 cells TH2 branches of the immune system It does this by increasing a specialized immune cell called your T-reg cells.

Regulatory T cells (Treg) are an important immune cell population, playing a crucial role in regulating immune tolerance and preventing autoimmune diseases.

Another way vitamin D helps the immune system in people with hashimotos is that is promotes production of anti-inflammatory cytokines.

Cytokines are cell signalling molecules that aid cell to cell communication in immune responses and stimulate the movement of cells towards sites of inflammation, infection and trauma.

Certain cytokines increase inflammation while other cytokines reduce inflammation. Vitamin D has been shown to decrease the pro-inflammatory cytokines in the body such as IL-6 and CRP levels. So, when you reduce inflammation, you will most likely also see a decrease the symptoms.

Studies also show vitamin helps in the reduction in thyroid antibodies. So those are three ways that vitamin D supplementation should be seriously considered if you have hashimotos thyroid disease.

So, you might be thinking this sounds great! Should I be taking Vitamin D supplements for my thyroid?

while vitamin D deficiency is one of the most common vitamin deficiencies seen in the western world because vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamins it can be stored in your fat tissues. For this reason its alway good to measure both your storage vitamin D levels as well as your active serum levels of vitamin D.

Increasing Your Vitamin D Levels

People with hashimotos thyroid disease should try to maintain active serum vitamin D levels around 60. Natural ways of increasing your vitamin D levels include spending 20-30 minute in sun everyday, eat fatty fish and several egg yolks per week. Most people benefit from supplementing with vitamin D in the form of a liquid vitamin D supplement. Now I will say that one thing I see in my clinic almost daily is low vitamin D levels and if you haven’t had your vitamin D levels tested in the last 6 months then this is one thing I would put on my list of thing to do.

Selenium Helps Hashimotos Thyroid Disease

Another critical vitamin that makes my list of best vitamins to take if you have thyroid disease or hashimotos is Selenium.

If there is any indication to the importance of selenium as it relates to the thyroid gland It should noted that gram per gram, your thyroid has more selenium than any other organ in the body.

For many people who have hypothyroidism, or hashimotos it is incredible common to see very low T3 and Free T3 levels when tested.

Low T3 can cause fatigue, brain fog, weight gain, hair loss, depression and many of the other low thyroid symptoms you might be familiar with. Here is where selenium shines. Selenium helps covert the inactive thyroid hormone T4 into T3 the active hormone.

But that’s not all selenium does for people with thyroid disease. For those with hashimotos, multiple studies have shown the benefits of selenium on the immune system. If you look at the conclusion of this study on selenium it says

“Maintaining a physiological concentration of selenium is a prerequisite to prevent thyroid disease and preserve overall health. Supplementation with the organic form is more effective, and patients with autoimmune thyroiditis seem to have benefits in immunological mechanisms.”

Another study showed that, supplementation with sodium selenite protected against thyroid tissue damage. The reason selenium is so beneficial is that selenium is a powerful antioxidant and antioxidants protect your cells.

The last study I wanted to tell should give hope to those woman who have experienced miscarriages as a result of hashimotos.

This study showed that patients taking 80μg of sodium selenite for a period of 12 months, not only an improvement in both thyroid peroxidase antibodies and but also a decrease in thyroglobulin antibodies, they also had ultrasounds that were improved, there was an improvement in mood and there was a statistical difference in miscarriages.

Now, I’ve already done an entire video on the Symptoms of selenium deficiency as well as the symptoms of selenium toxicitywhich you do need to be aware of… so if you want to know more about those aspect of selenium, you can watch that video below or read the article here

Zinc Helps Hashimotos Thyroid disease

The last vitamin on my list of best vitamins to take when you have Hashimotos or thyroid disease that been shown to help Hashimotos is Zinc.

Zinc (like selenium) possesses powerful antioxidant ability so it decreases oxidative stress and inflammation within the thyroid gland and that is super important in preventing the progression of thyroid damage.

The one thing you always should be aware of is the connection between zinc and copper. When zinc levels are low, your copper levels often run high. Copper can cause a lot of damage to the thyroid gland when levels are elevated. High copper can cause anxiety, depression, insomnia, abdominal pain, liver problems, diarrhea, it can also cause problems with your red blood cells. Copper toxicity can be caused by genetic conditions such as Pyrrole disorder aka (Pyroluria) or exposure to high levels of copper in food, water, IUDs and certain medications.

Suffers of this condition produce too much of a byproduct called hydroxyhemopyrrolin-2-one (HPL). The HPL binds to zinc and B6 preventing their absorption by the body and causing excretion in the urine, eventually the condition manifests as a serious zinc and B6 deficiency. Low zinc allows for high copper levels.

Zinc also helps with healing an irritated, inflamed gut Leaky gut. Leaky gut is predisposing Trigger to autoimmune thyroid disease. Many people with Hashimotos unknowingly have a leaky gut. The good news is that leaky gut can be healed with the right supplements.

Learn more about the Triggers behind autoimmune diseases.

Here is where supplementing with zinc can help heal the gut which in turn helps the immune system. Some of the most common symptoms seen with zinc deficiency include diarrhea, lowered immunity, thinning hair, decreased appetite, mood disturbances, dry skin, skin rashes, changes in strength or color of your nails.
