Tooth Restorations: How Dental Crowns Can Help

A Dental crown can serve many purposes. This type of restoration looks great and allows your dentist to save a Tooth that otherwise may require extraction.

Functional and Purposeful Crowns

Restore a tooth with extensive decay … if the decayed portion of a tooth is too large for a filling, a Dental Crown is required.

Save a fractured or broken tooth … while teeth are very strong, they are not invincible. Biting down on something hard can result in breaking part of your tooth off. In this instance, crowning the tooth is the only option other than extraction.

Anchor a fixed partial or bridge … patients requiring a tooth replacement can opt for a removable prosthesis. However, a fixed appliance is an option for patients who are looking for a more permanent solution. The teeth on either side of missing dentition are prepped for crowns. Your dentist will affix your partial or bridge by cementing crowns in place with “false” teeth called pontics in between.

The final step in endodontic therapy … when a root canal is needed to save a tooth, an entry point is created in the tooth. At treatment completion, that entry requires a permanent seal. In many cases, a dental crown is used.

Cover a dental implant … if tooth loss has occurred, and the patient opts for a dental implant, a crown will be attached to the implant to provide a beautiful and functional restoration. Patients will be able to eat their favorite foods, smile with self-confidence, and speak clearly without any fear of slippage.

Caring for a Dental Crown

Patients are instructed to care for a crowned tooth the same as their biological teeth. Brush twice daily with a fluoridated toothpaste, floss daily (your dental provider will demonstrate the proper way to floss around a crowned tooth), and visit our dentist as directed for a cleaning and dental exam. A crowned tooth is still an area that can experience gingival problems so you and our dental team want to make sure it receives great care to protect your investment and serve you well for many years.
