5 Fun Facts You Probably Didn’t Know About Our Surrey and Langley Orthodontists

Orthodontic treatment with Invisalign or braces typically goes on for a few years. An obviously within that time, your orthodontist is a key part of your smile’s success. So doesn’t it make sense to get to know your local orthodontist a little better?

In this post, the team at Aura Orthodontics wants to share a bit more about ourselves; we’re all actually very cool and interesting… and exceptionally smart! So without further ado, here are five fun facts about Dr. Sharma, Dr. Lin, Dr. Koo, and your Fraser Valley orthodontic team.

1. Dr. Sharma Achieved a Spot in the Prestigious Omicron Kappa Upsilon Honour Society in Dental School

Always a high achiever, Aura Orthodontics’ visionary founder, Dr. Vishal Sharma became a member of this national honourary society in dentistry during his studies. Members of Omicron Kappa Upsilon Honour Society are offered membership through a two step process: they must be in the top 20% of their school’s graduating class, then faculty votes based on qualities above and beyond like character, service, or research. In the end, typically only the top 12% of students are selected.

2. Dr. Lin Studied Astrophysics Before Deciding on Orthodontics

The next time you’re in a braces or Invisalign appointment with Dr. Everett Lin, quiz him on dark matter. Yup, in his undergrad at Columbia University, Dr. Lin studied this most “out there” of sciences and graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor’s degree in applied physics. He even contributed to pioneering astrophysics research.

Born and raised in Vancouver, Dr. Lin loves being back in his home province as an orthodontist serving Langley and Surrey, BC.

3. Dr. Koo is An East Coast Transplant to the West Coast

A Korean-American, Dr. Julia Koo arrived in BC by way of New Jersey and New York City. How’d she decide on a transcontinental move? She met Dr. Lin during her orthodontic residency at Rutgers School of Dental Medicine and eventually (after a long distance relationship while finishing residency), Dr. Koo and Dr. Lin decided on the West Coast as their together home.

4. A Mutual Friend Introduced Dr. Sharma and Dr. Lin at an Orthodontics Conference

Meeting at a 2016 American Associations of Orthodontics conference was the catalyst for adding Dr. Lin’s expertise to Aura Orthodontics as a local orthodontist. A mutual friend introduced him to Dr. Sharma and Dr. Lin was inspired by his passion for orthodontics and patient care. What can we say? Sometimes schmoozing at a conference actually pays off!

5. The Doctors and Staff at Aura Orthodontics Can Talk With Patients in a Variety of Languages

A reflection of the Fraser Valley’s beautiful diversity, the doctors and staff at Aura Orthodontics currently can converse with patients in several different languages:

  • English
  • Punjabi
  • Hindi
  • Urdu
  • Cantonese
  • Tagalog
  • Korean
  • Mandarin
  • Spanish

As a multilingual practice, patients have the opportunity to feel more comfortable and experience clear communication with the Aura team — an invaluable help when it comes to talking about something as personal (and technical!) as orthodontic treatment. Dr. Sharma speaks fluent English, Punjabi, Hindi, and Urdu which adds another level to his deep dedication to a patient- and people-first approach.
