4 Healthy (ish) Cocktails For New Years

'

Healthier Boozing This Festive Season!

  • Always drink water between each cocktail, sticking to a 1:1 ratio
  • Avoid pre-made mixes and always use fresh squeezed juices - this helps reduce added sugars!
  • Limit to no more than 2-3 cocktails a night, only a couple times a week
  • Watch your drink size and keep it to 8oz or less. Watch out for those fishbowl-sized cocktails!
  • Avoid simple syrup (it's basically just a code name for sugar)
  • Be sure to eat a healthy dinner before you enjoy your favourite cocktails

Recently, Popsugar shared a post that contained information about what exactly it takes to burn off your cocktails and let me tell you... I was shocked!

Did you know, it takes almost an hour and a half to burn off 2 margaritas!

So what can I drink?! Bmoretoned has put together a list of 4 easy drinks you could ether purchase or even attempted to make at home yourself AND you won't feel so guilty about these ones!

1) Spiced Cider

With only about 150 calories, this warm drink it perfect for the cold days and nights. Add some orange and cloves to give it a winter twist.

  • 8 cups apple cider
  • 1 bottle Malibu Island Spiced Rum (1 shot per each serving)
  • 1 teaspoon whole cloves
  • 8 cinnamon sticks
  • 2 oranges, sliced

In a large pot, heat all ingredients except the Malibu Island Spiced Rum to boiling over medium heat, saving one of the oranges to use as garnish. Reduce heat and simmer uncovered for 10 minutes before serving.

Strain the mixture to remove the cloves. Add a shot of Malibu Island Spiced Rum to each serving.

Add the remaining fresh orange slices to each cup, serve hot, and enjoy!

2) White Sangria

Please see recipe in image below!

3) Yuengling Light Lager

Looking for a non-watered down beer that’s still light on calories? Yuengling managed to combine the health benefits of a lager with a lower carb count. At only 99 calories, this is a solid selection for a healthier classic brew.

4) Cucumber Gimlet

Add some refreshing Cucumber and use agave to get this drink to about 150 calories. In this winter, spice it up using some basil leaves!

 Start by assembling your ingredients:

  • English seedless cucumber (mine was very long and I only used 1/2 of it)
  • 3 limes
  • Simple syrup (I used homemade basil simple syrup - see recipe below)
  • Vodka

And your materials:

  • Blender (I used our small smoothie blender)
  • Citrus juicer
  • Shot glass

- Cut your cucumber in thirds.  Remove the peel from the larger portion of cucumber

- Cut this peeled cucumber into chunks and add into the blender

- Use your citrus juicer to juice all of your lime halves.  I juiced mine straight into the blender

- Pulse peeled cucumber chunks and lime juice together until smooth and frothy

- Natalie's recipe calls for two shots of vodka per glass, but we reduced this to just one shot of vodka per glass

- Add the vodka and cucumber/lime mixture to your glass and let it sit for a bit to infuse together.  This is a great tip from Natalie!

- This is another area where we tweaked the recipe a bit: I then cut the mixture with a little lime seltzer water.  It doesn't have a very strong lime flavor, just a hint of it.

- Slice your remaining 1/3 of the cucumber and add the slices into the glass and one for garnish.  Top with ice.

Serve and enjoy!
