PANDAS/PANS Awareness Day 2023

By Abbie Cornett

IG Living magazine is committed to supporting patients with rare and chronic diseases that require lifesaving immune globulin therapy. We extend this dedication to children and their families affected by childhood diseases such as pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorder associated with streptococcal infections (PANDAS)/pediatric acute-onset neuropsychiatric syndrome (PANS), Kawasaki Disease and primary immunodeficiency diseases. Through education, communication and advocacy, we strive to make a positive impact.

One aspect of our commitment is raising Awareness about PANDAS/PANS, a disease that has gained recognition only in recent years and has been a subject of much debate. The lack of information, combined with the profound symptoms experienced by affected children, can be devastating for families.

According to the PANDAS Network, PANDAS/PANS is defined as the "sudden acute and debilitating onset of intense anxiety and mood liability accompanied by obsessive-compulsive-like issues and/or tics in association with a streptococcal-A (GABHS) infection that has occurred immediately prior to the symptoms." Children affected by this condition can quickly develop life-altering symptoms, including OCD, anxiety, tics, personality changes, declines in math and handwriting abilities, sensory sensitivities, restrictive eating and more.

As the patient advocate for IG Living, I've had the privilege of getting to know some incredible children and their parents who are affected by this disease. I've witnessed the challenges many of these families face due to a lack of understanding.

In our efforts to raise awareness, IG Living is supporting the PANDAS Network's initiative to recognize Oct. 9 as National PANDAS/PANS Awareness Day. We encourage everyone to visit the network's website at PandasNetwork.org to learn more about this devastating disease.

National awareness days play a crucial role in helping people understand the impact of these diseases. By shedding light on conditions such as PANDAS/PANS, we can foster greater empathy, support and research efforts to improve the lives of those affected.
