Nov 11, Coming to Terms with Autoimmune Diseases

The Immune function of the human body is one of the most complex and intelligent biological systems we have to defend our health from toxins and outside invaders. Since I'm meeting an increasing number of folks who are plagued with rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and Type-1 Diabetes, let's talk about what may be causing this increase in autoimmune disease diagnoses.
Medical Doctors, specifically rheumatologists, would have us believe that for some unknown reason, our immune system "went haywire" and got stupid, telling it's white blood cells and other parts of the immune system to begin attacking our own body parts. Typically, they say they can't tell us why.
That doesn't increase my confidence, right there!
We'll let that go for the moment. So what do they prescribe to treat this wide variety of symptoms?
They give the patient powerful drugs to disable their immune system, which is all there is to protect them from any type of bacteria, virus, or environmental toxin that comes in contact with them! To my way of thinking, that sounds like a prescription for making the patient's condition much worse.
Rheumatologists even prescribe chemotherapy drugs to cause the patient's immune system to back off! That seems pretty drastic (but chemotherapy drugs -- very expensive -- are one of the few drugs doctors get a direct kickback when they prescribe, so that may partially explain this.
The best comprehensive cause of autoimmunity that some mainstream physicians offer is that a "leaky gut" allows undigested proteins into the patient's blood stream, causing their immune system to begin attacking body tissues that look like these out-of-place dietary proteins that slip through the gut lining.
Okay, that at least makes some sense. But, assuming that's the cause, wouldn't it make more sense to help the gut lining to heal so that these invasive dietary proteins stop coming into the patient's bloodstream?
Destroying the patient's immune system seems a very drastic response to any disease. It is something modern pharmaceutical medicine knows how to do... and it is very profitable, so they do it.
Consider also that glyphosate, a key ingredient in the herbicide Roundup, is believed to cause gut permeability, so the gut may begin to heal when we stop consuming non-organic foods that might contain glyphosate. our body is known to be able to heal itself, you know.
Healing my gut, rather than downregulating my entire immune system, which is extremely important, makes more sense to me -- and, would be my choice -- if I had an autoimmune condition.
