Aug 19, Does Kratom Help with Neuropathy?

About once a month I see that someone has found this site by using the search term, "kratom and neuropathy", so let's talk about that today.
When we look up a good source, for instance the Mayo Clinic, and ask what causes diabetic neuropathy, they tell us that, "Prolonged exposure to high blood sugar can damage delicate nerve fibers..." and "High blood sugar also interferes with the ability of the nerves to transmit signals. It also weakens the walls of the small blood vessels that supply the nerves with oxygen and nutrients."
So, in plain English, because of reduced blood flow to the nerves in your extremities, they send pain and weird discomfort signals to let you know they are starving for oxygen and nutrients. Other factors that make this situation worse are excessive alcohol consumption and smoking. Smoking, in particular, shrinks the blood vessels and limits the oxygen absorption capacity of the smoker's lungs, so it is doubly destructive in causing diabetic neuropathy.
One other factor mentioned by the Mayo Clinic is, "Inflammation in the nerves caused by an autoimmune response" to undigested proteins slipping into the blood through a "leaky gut". Dr. Wallach points out that gluten damages our delicate intestinal lining, which lets undigested food molecules enter our blood stream -- a good reason to avoid wheat, barley, rye, and oats. Rice and quinoa flour, for 2 examples, don't cause this damage.
Kratom can help by reducing blood sugars by helping them enter our cells where they can be made into energy. Kratom also contains alkaloids known to relax the smooth muscle that lines our blood vessels, thus reducing high blood pressure, and allowing more blood to get to the starving nerves.
Will it happen immediately? Perhaps, but the greatest benefits usually come from allowing our body to heal itself, once we stop the bad habits that are worsening blood flow to these tiny nerves.
Kratom is also a pain reliever. I have heard anecdotal reports of neuropathy pain being reduced by kratom use, but -- at the same time -- it is known to help reduce the conditions that are causing the pain. To learn more and see how kratom apparently helps insulin transport blood sugar into our cells, see THIS.
