Attendees were shown a future vision of smart Infusion Pump interoperability at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) vignette. Smiths Medical demonstrated the actual syringe infusion pump data transfer to the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) based on the IHE (Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise) Patient Care Device Technical Framework that includes the Device Enterprise Communication (DEC), Infusion Pump Event Communication (IPEC), and Alert Communication Management (ACM) integration profiles.

Smiths Medical and the IHE group have collaborated in their efforts toward further advancement of standard integration profiles for infusion pumps. The combined integration profiles allow transfer of device-specific data to EMR systems based on established compatibility standards. The DEC and IPEC profiles are designed for device and clinical data support, while the ACM profile allows alerts communicated directly to the clinicians for quicker, more comprehensive response each time.
