What is Acne?

Your Skin has glands called sebaceous glands, which are attached to hair follicles and are primarily on the face, neck, back and chest. These glands produce a substance called sebum. Sebum is an oily substance that mixes with the moisture produced by the sweat glands. Your skin needs sebum to protect it and lock in moisture to prevent your skin from becoming dry and cracked.

Too much sebum, however, can cause the pores to become blocked and leads to blemishes. These eruptions become blackheads and lead to pimples.

Difference between Acne and Pimples:

A pimple is a skin lesion indicated as a round bump caused by the inflammation of sebaceous glands. on the other hand acne is symbolized as pimples, whiteheads and blackheads.

Black heads:

Black heads are the acne which develop when the skin produces too much oil. There are two major causes of development of acne:

  • At the age of majority(teen agers) hormones become unregulated due to a by product called dihydrotestosterone, this hormone results in excess production of skin oil which clog the pores and results in the formation of black heads.
  • When the skin is not cleaned properly dirt and dead skin cells accumulate in thepores which clog the pore opening which then results in oil build up, which then results the formation of black head.

White heads:

White heads are formed when sebaceous glands secrete excessive sebum. Theexcess oils move outside the skin through sebaceous follicles and, combined with cells that have flaked down from around these passages, settle on the follicle ends, becoming a plug,(comedo) that blocks the skin pores. The continuous flow of oils and dead cells accumulate and fill the follicles at bulging point showing up on the surface of the skin as tiny, whitish dots called whiteheads.
