A root canal sealer is mainly used to attain a fluid tight seal. A sealer prevents peri-apical exudates from diffusing into the unfilled part of the canal so as to avoid reentry and recolonisation of bacteria from the peri-apical tissues. A sealer is also used as an adjunct in the obturation of the root canals. And hence the biocompatibility is important so as to achieve a favorable prognosis. Certain commercially available sealers can be cytotoxic and can irritate the periapical tissues. But, this cytotoxicity should be minimal to facilitate the periapical healing of the tissues. |
