Watch: MP School Kid Builds Simple Washing Machine That Needs No Electricity!

A Washing Machine is a common household appliance nowadays. It seems no household is complete without it.

But for a majority of Indians, a Washing Machine is a privilege. Either because of its affordability or because the machine needs a good supply of electricity. Both of which are a huge concern for underprivileged people.

However, a class 8 student took matters into his hands and made a washing machine that requires no electricity!

young Indian innovates washing machine

With more than 300 million homes in India without electricity, the contraption invented by the 10-year-old can benefit many, not just because of the no-electricity feature but also because of its affordability!

Darshan Kolhe from Govt LBS Boys Middle School, Pandhurna, Madhya Pradesh, made the washing machine with an old cycle and a recycled barrel. With just a push of the pedals, the “washing machine” starts off.

The device works like this: the cycle chain is hooked up to a grill mesh container which rotates along with the chain of the cycle. The mesh container sits inside a barrel where water can be loaded along with soap.

The clothes are loaded inside the mesh which is spun with the soapy water in the barrel. Note that one needs to cycle manually for the device to wash clothes.

Here in the video, Darshan demonstrates how the contraption works with dirty clothes loaded into the machine.

And like any other washing machine, this one comes with a drying option. One only has to empty the barrel of water and let the mesh spin openly. This removes excess water from the clothes giving you an almost perfect machine wash!

Darshan also demonstrated the device at the National Level Inspire Award competition at IIT Delhi where his innovation was selected to be showcased at international portals.

With an old cycle and a recycled barrel, the machine won’t take up much cost to set up. And with all the cycling, it also seems to provide a healthier lifestyle.
