In consonance with raising the spirit of building the scientific temper in India, the Department of Science and Technology under the Centre started the Kishore Vaignyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) program in 1999 to encourage students studying basic science to opt for a research career.
According to the website, under this programme, “a generous fellowship and contingency grant are provided to the selected KVPY Fellows up to the pre-Ph.D. level, or 5 years whichever is earlier.”
The program is administered by the prestigious Indian Institute of Science.
Earlier this month, S Arun Kumar, a II PUC (Class 12 in the Karnataka State Board) student from Mysuru qualified for the prestigious KVPY. The student from Sankalpa Gopalaswamy College is the son of Shivanna, a banana seller at Sankalpa Gopalaswamy College and Manjula, a daily wager, reports The Hindu. He cleared the KVPY exam and an interview by a panel of top scientists at IISc.

College authorities have exuded great confidence in Arun. “We found that he was brilliant and put him through competitive examination coaching conducted by a dedicated cell in our college, and he excelled,” said Akshay Rao, Academic-in-charge in the college, to the publication.
After qualifying for the KVPY, Arun is expected to earn admission into the prestigious IISc, studying an integrated (Bachelors and Masters) pure science course, resulting in a postgraduate degree. The scholarship he will receive during the course will increase periodically till he attains the degree.
“The best and most brilliant minds are opting for professional courses. Hence, the government has introduced this scholarship programme to draw young people to pursue pure science courses. This will ensure the growth of best scientific minds who can go on to undertake research and development for the country,” Rao added.

Besides Arun, two other students from the college have cleared the KVPY exam and interview. According to the publication they are confident of getting admission into IISc or the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER).
