In one day from now, we will all be ushering in 2018. While some of us prefer the comfort of our home to celebrate the event, some others enjoy being out, revelling until the wee hours of the morning.
While having fun is a great idea, it is of paramount importance that we refrain from drunk Driving and also discourage others from indulging in it. Various reports suggest that instances of drunken driving have reduced over the years but still are a cause of concern for city Police.
City police in various states are gearing up to keep a strict watch over road traffic conditions, drunk driving cases, an also unruly behaviour and safety of women.
Here’s a look at what some states are doing!
In a move to deter people from drinking and driving, Chennai city police announced implementing a series of stringent measures to curb drunken driving.
This time, the culprit will not only lose his or her license, but the person’s details will be updated in the Crime Record Bureau.
“In the event of the details of those facing case of drunken driving being updated in the CRB, they might face difficulty in obtaining a No Objection Certificate (NOC) for police verification during the passport verification and visa verification process,” they said, as reported in The Indian Express.
Mumbai’s police force is known for its strict zero-tolerance policy toward drunk driving. In addition, the focus this year is also curbing drug use. Mumbai police’s anti-narcotics cell (ANC) will keep a hawk’s eye on New Year parties, and the ANC’s five units will take several measures to keep drug peddlers at bay.
“This year, our focus was on the supply of drugs, and we managed to end this supply chain in phases. First, we started with MD also known as meow-meow by cracking down on its factory in Karnataka. This was followed by charas where we captured people from J&K. Then, we seized large quantities of heroin, which came from Rajasthan. We also seized ganja at regular intervals this year,” as reported in Hindustan Times.
To report any drug-related activities anonymously, the ANC has appealed to youngsters or their parents to contact them on their Narcoline — 9819111222.
The capital is infamous for its crimes against women, and the police personnel have their work chalked out for the next few days. Security and surveillance have been beefed up across the city already.
SWAT commandos, anti-terrorist squads, bomb detections and disposal teams along with dog squads will be put on standby mode in case of any untoward incidence.
From December 31 night till January 1 morning, the police will hold ‘Integrated Checking’ where local police personnel, traffic police and a Police Control Room van will keep a check on street crimes.
These integrated special pickets will check stunts on motorcycles, speeding vehicles, reckless driving, zig-zag and dangerous driving at vulnerable locations, as reported in The Hindu.
In Gurugram, besides deploying a massive force of 500 officials, there are plans to make the MG road a car-free zone from 6 pm to 1 am on December 31.
To avoid a situation like the one that occurred last year, the city police is working extra hard to beef up security. From multiple checkpoints for drunken driving to an increased number of patrol vehicles, the city police say they have charted out a plan of action to avoid a repeat of last year.
This year the police personnel have also asked all city hotels and pubs to install CCTV cameras both within and outside the premise, note down the name and contact details of all guests who are part of the celebrations.
The police force is going to be focusing on increased patrolling, dedicated monitoring of the CCTV footage to ensure the safety of women.
The city police have conducted campaigns and counselling sessions at colleges across the city to emphasise the importance of not drinking and driving. The city police have also put up flex boards across the city discouraging people from overindulgence and warning them against drunken driving.
While Gujarat is a dry-state, the police in the state is not taking a chance and have strict plans in place for New Year’s Eve. Keeping an eagle eye through CCTV cameras, police will be stationed at strategic locations, and also scan through social media messages to check for parties, especially where alcohol flows.
From 8 pm on December 31, till the early hours of January 1, three teams of cops from each police station, crime branch teams and special operations group will be deployed in the city. Not only drunk drivers, the police will also keep an eye for eve-teasers, reckless drivers and other offenders. Police commissioner has given special instructions to the traffic department to file cases against reckless drivers, as reported by Ahmedebad Mirror.
If you know of any additional measures being taken in your city, do write in.
