Meet the Delhi Cop Who Gifts Safety Violators Helmets Free of Cost!

Don’t be surprised if you find Delhi cop Sandeep at a crossing at Rohini, a suburb in located in north-west Delhi, booking traffic violators and gifting them a free helmet at the end of his counselling session!

Often seen post his duty hours at the Rohini crossing with traffic cops, constable Sandeep keenly looks out for these helmetless riders.

Once he books them, the cop doesn’t stop. He has made it his personal project to emphasise the importance of road safety. He takes time out to explain to the helmetless rider the repercussions of not wearing a helmet and the prime reasons why traffic police insist they ride with helmets on.

“When the riders are convinced, I offer them a helmet,” said Sandeep in an interview with The Times of India.

Explaining the motivation behind his personal initiative, he expressed how his career with Delhi Police revealed that 90% road deaths involving motorcyclists occurred due to riders not wearing Helmets or wearing them improperly.

“I began giving out helmets to create awareness about the issue,” he says.

He even follows an unusual strategy for the festive seasons. In addition to making sure free helmets are distributed to violators, on occasions like Raksha Bandhan and Bhaiya Dooj, Sandeep counsels women and children about the importance of the helmet rule.

He explains that when they ride pillion with helmetless riders, they also become vulnerable to accidents. This helps women and children impact change in their own families by encouraging motorists in their families to ride with helmets on.

Sandeep has also put up posters in Peeragarhi and Pitampura asking riders not to neglect using helmets.

His personal project has been lauded by his higher-ups and colleagues in his department who have extended full support.

“It is a personal venture, but Delhi Police is highly appreciative of it,” said Madhur Verma, DCP, PRO, Delhi Police.

In the upcoming years, Sandeep plans to create awareness about not using the mobile phone while driving and the importance of wearing seatbelts too!

We salute his spirit and wish him all the best!
