Want to Buy Fresh Veggies off a Boat? Kolkata to Soon Have Its Own Floating Market

Kolkata’s Patuli area will bear a surreal look, come next year. A hundred and fourteen boats, each housing two shops, will dot the waterfront, located on the fringes on Biswa Bangla Sarani, or the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass, in South Kolkata.

An elevated walking path and a footbridge will be built where the Market is located, over the pond and highway, respectively.

Walk down the manicured lawns and gardens on the bank, and take your pick from fruits, vegetables, fish, meat, cereals, rice, edible oils, and tea.

This initiative aims to rehabilitate sellers displaced due to the widening of the EM Bypass. Their businesses at the Baishnabghata-Patuli market on the EM Bypass will now be at the Floating Market, a senior official of the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) informed PTI.

The boats, inspired by floating markets in Thailand and Indonesia, are around 10 feet in length and have been painted in bright colours, according to Urban Development and Municipal Affairs Minister, Mr Firhad Hakim on NDTV.

Those who have visited Srinagar and Bangkok might find that these markets in Kolkata resemble the ones found there. Arup Bhattacharya, the Local Councillor, who initiated this project along with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Mr Hakim, told India Today he hopes that just like the Howrah Bridge, and the Victoria Memorial, this market also becomes a tourist attraction.
