Libre after 6 months, profit or loss?

543 100 people are living with diabetes in Belgium. When in the end of June the reimbursement of the Freestyle Libre was announced, a race for the first Libre was opened. For me it was like Apple doing a stock sale. Everybody ready to run in the hospital for that very first Libre, hospitals not (completely) ready for this madness. Then the first social media posts of the Libre appeared. Waiting queues were the solution. Now everybody is settled.
After half a year of Libre I’d like to reflect on what it has changed.

Belgian reimbursement for diabetes care is organised in so-called conventions. A convention is an agreement in between the RZIV and a hospital. The RZIV is the federal institute for illness and invalidity assurance. It organises the financing of care and cure for Belgian citizens, amongst other things. The Freestyle Libre is also financed by the convention system. The Freestyle libre is fully reimbursed for people with diabetes under conditions stated in the sensor convention.
